Lancashire is a county in northwestern England of nearly 1.5 million people. The Lancashire Evening Post, one of the regional daily newspapers that services the county, has a circulation of less than 30,000. I point this out because it means nobody cares about the LEP.

So it perhaps isn’t that surprising to learn that in the quest for relevance, LEP isn’t always concerned with good journalism. I won’t even bother running through the story with you, but I will give you some choice absurd quotes.

“And one expert today warned two hours of playing games produces the same high as taking a line of cocaine.”

“Alarming figures reveal three out of five under 16-years-old plays video games to such an extent that it is a cause for concern for health care professionals.”

The article also features the following string of quotes from “expert” Steve Pope:

“I saw one 14-year-old Preston boy who played on games for 24 hours non stop and had not eaten and was showing signs of dehydration.

“When his parents tried to take his console away, he became aggressive and threatened to jump out of a window.

“We have also dealt with children who have been skipping school and others who have been stealing from their parents to buy games.

“Computer game addiction can also spiral into violence as after playing violent games, they may turn their fantasy games into reality.”

It’s the catch-all of parents’ fears of what games will do to their children. Beautiful work, Lancashire Evening Post. Read the rest here , and then spam them with mocking emails. Good times.

One last thing: if video games and cocaine have the same effect, then college students can now justify playing games rather than studying by saying they’re just preparing to study.
