Portfolio Tips for VideoGame Art

from moonapples.com ............ Introduction

As an Art Director at a studio with several concurrent games, I make it a priority to be involved with all artist hires, as the whole studio is only as good as the quality of the people who work there. It is not uncommon to have weeks where I sort through hundreds of portfolios, and in looking at so many submitted works, I have noticed some commonalities between people we hire and people we don’t.

While the gist of this is written for a entry-level artist point of view, most of this applies to all skill levels, as a Senior Artist’s portfolio can often get to desks in the same pile as students right out of school, and without better information gets prioritized the same and goes through the same HR processes.

20 minutes speed paint put 4 times faster. You can see the pic in higher res here : http://mv.cgcommunity.com/images/videosketch.jpg ...
This is the first time I record myself painting, basically shows the initial stages of the "mindless" workflow. I'll try to post more videos in the future!

Advanced Tutorial: Creating ‘Broken Link’

from photoshoplady.com ..................CoolSurface.com’s David Cousens takes you through his design process…

Warning: This tutorial is NOT FOR BEGINNERS, it’s for people who know their way around Photoshop and are looking to further their design knowledge/skills. If you aren’t comfortable with radial gradients, overlay layers and clipping mask layers and have a good foundation level of artistic skill this tutorial probably isn’t for you. Oh, and you should definitely have a graphics tablet; it would be undiluted madness to try this with a mouse!

Awesome digital painting from Levente Peterffy Check it out!

http://www.leventep.com/index.html

Speedpainting Assault
A quick and rough sketch. Watch the video to see how i block out shape color and light.Notice that this is not predetermined painting. I keep painting on the shapes that i recognize and i continue building more and more. However this process can be apllied to intentional motivs too. The idea is that you know what kind of colors you want in the end and what kind of shapes. For instance a tech environment has lots of lines and solids. So the initial stock photo should have these features too. Its not always required but it helps on the way.

Speedpainting Knight
n this video tutorial i take you through my painting process. The focus is on recognizing shapes color, light and texture. The painting took under 2h and i hope it can give a good insight to my working process.I also discovered the comressor H.264, which is a Mpeg 4 layer to compressor, and a bloody good one too!

Speedpainting Lady
In this video tutorial i show you how you can quickly recognize shapes, and how to build on the painting from that step.A key issue when working with speedpainting is to start with set values, from former painting or stockphotos. Because when working with these values, it gives you a color range, take note that this doesnt tell you what the motive should be.

Speedpainting Tanks
A short video tutorial. I think this examle shows the effectiveness of starting a painting with set values. This video is also in realtime.

Game Industry for Entry Level Artists: The Job

from gamecareerguide.com ........ Introduction

After deciding your specific talents and creating your website portfolio as I advised in Part One: Portfolios and following the steps in Applying for Your First Game Industry Job , hopefully you landed a job. Now what do entry level artists do while employed?

There are some extremely talented artists out there and those who have a great deal of talent are more than happy to share it with you. Learn from these folks and share ideas. You’ll soon find yourself growing as an artist and doing things that you couldn’t do before. Who knows, maybe you started as a modeler and now you are an animator and you’re happier doing animation. Don’t go into a dark corner of the office and hide. Be social, meet the senior artists and let them know that you want to learn from them.

There are going to be times when you have no idea what people are talking about. This ain’t school! You better ask someone right away to translate what’s being said. Put your pride aside and learn. Who cares if someone thinks you’re silly. At some point, they had to ask too.

And speaking of school, if you did attend school before coming into the game industry, you’ll find that you’re not getting a grade on your work and people don’t have the time to always tell you how good or bad something is. Sometimes, critiques on work have to be sacrificed in order to meet a milestone. So a healthy dose of self-confidence goes a long way.

Be active during company meetings—if you have a question or a concern and this is the right place and time, go for it! If someone asks for your opinion, don’t be shy, offer one. Attend after work ‘get togethers’ if possible. This is a great way to meet your co-workers outside of the stressed work environment.

Keep your website running and updated when appropriate. You never know when you’ll need it again.
