The art style for this game looks really cool.
I saw a gameplay video from a while back that looked fairly bland. I'm hoping they improved more than just their art style. ![]()

I dunno, I've seen other very short trailers lately for games that are actually pretty cool. Perhaps that's all they had to show with the new converted art style when the teaser was commissioned, possibly a month or more ago.
Here's to hoping there's a comprehensive hands-on E3 demo.

Borderlands as compared to Fallout 3, Diablo, UT series, and Mass Effect:
I'd say it has a setting similar to Fallout, but more cartoony (in terms of visual style, voice acting, seemingly more shallow characters and plotline). The experience is much more guided with less of an emphasis on exploration. Lots of fetch quests, which are essentially just excuses to run around shooting things. You can pick up a lot of quests at the same time, however, and this allows you to go to an area and get a lot of various things done. The gameplay is much better than Fallout's. Character control is much tighter, weapons feel more responsive, etc. The game itself feels more balanced as well, which is arguably a lot easier to do in a mostly linear game. It suffers from some of UT3's character controller/world collision issues(like when you get hung up on a 2-inch bump on the floor), although it's better than UT3 in that respect. The weapon and character control feel isn't quite as tight as UT3 (and therefore not as tight as any of the previous UT games) but it's still enjoyable to shoot things and run around.I've played the sniper class in Mass Effect as well as in Borderlands, and the enemies in Borderlands and the weapon feel makes for a much more enjoyable experience. Granted, I played ME on an XBox, I'm still a pretty good shot with a controller. Critical shots are determined based on where you shoot an enemy. Some enemies expose their weak spots as they are attacking, which makes for a more interesting fight. The skill tree is fairly straightforward, and encourages players to focus on one of three paths. If you've played any number of RPG games with a skill tree, you know what I'm talking about. The weapons are cool, although the drawback to their "16 Bajillion" weapons is that I spend a lot of time comparing various qualities of weapons together instead of shooting things. Now I like doing this, but there doesn't seem to be much to grasp onto in terms of quickly identifying how good a gun is. I often only have a fair idea for the quality of a gun, and actually have to try it out to see if it's actually any better. In Diablo, there was a system to which weapons were created. There was a naming convention like "Silver Axe of the Wolf" which would tell you the relative strength, type of weapon, and special stat bonuses. If you had a Sword of the Wolf and an Axe of the Wolf, chances are the special stat bonuses would be similar. Borderlands takes this system to an absurd degree, with nonsensical letters thrown in that drastically change the qualities of the gun. I tend to just use the relative price of the weapon to determine how good it is. I have been playing it quite a bit. The positives far outweigh the negatives.

I played this co-op with my friend on his PS3 last weekend and we had a blast. This game is definitly most fun co-op as you constantly run around and help eachother as well as mess with eachother. Every now and then when there was a dull moment we'd start a short PVP duel just for the fun of it. We did this by accident at the start of the tutorial mission and ended up not having enough ammo to shoot back at the NPCs.
![]() I really like the style and somewhat weird humour in the game. Character and boss introductions are awesome. ![]() I love all the randomized weapons and gear, though I agree that it can be a bit difficult to tell just how good a weapon is compared to your current one. Not only do you have to take accuracy, capacity, reload speed and damage into account, but also bonus damage (%), bonus firing speed, bonus abilities etc. And the game's not really telling you if those numbers are added to the weapons stats when you look at how much damage it does by default. Still, the weapon generator comes up with some crazy weapons at times. There was this one time I found a shotgun, really powerful, but terrible accuracy and a really powerful sniping scope. What the hell am I supposed to do with a sniping scope on a shotgun? ![]() My only letdown, as far as I played, was that the vehicles got stuck all the time on just about everything. I'm definitly considering purchasing this over Steam once it's released. |

My brother has this on the PC, and I have it for the PS3, but we do have separate coop characters to play with on the PS3.
For my coop character, I'm the siren. I like her, but the whole invisibility thing is interesting. I can't figure out how to attack while invisible. My brother is the soldier, and the turret is neat. But, I'm having a TON of fun with my primary character. I'm the hunter, because the bloodwing ability is AMAZING. I don't need defensive or attacking boosts, so I've been building up bloodwing. He swoops down and instantly kills something, and hits for abut 250-300, and I'm only level 10. The soldier's turret ability is neat, but so-so, and the berserker's rage ability is good, but I suck at melee characters. I'm very good at doing the melee attack at the right moment, though. How do you guys like the game so far? At about what level do the explosive weapons begin dropping? I reeeeeeeeeaally want one. Right now, my character is level 10, has a 118-point shield, a damn good sniper rifle and a VERY good combat rifle. I've only ever built up bloodwing, so he's great in battle. How about you guys? |

I beat the game with my Soldier .. going for playthrough 2 now.
I can't remember when the explosive weapons start dropping, but they can be great in certain situations on certain mobs. It's funny with the weapons, cause I found a 4x scoped pistol that does MASSIVE damage and also corrosive damage at the same time. I can simply 1(critical) or 2-3 shot some of the toughest guys in the game with that thing from a long way off. It's quite satisfying to watch a 1 shot head blown off critical hit on a really tough mob. But I also started a hunter (sniper) just to see how he plays. I find the hunter harder to play because he seems squishy compared to the Soldier. But I am still having fun with him. Really, I can't see how you can go wrong with the character choices.. the game is fun no matter what.
