don't wanna install 2000

I recently put a new motherboard (gigabyte) and a whole bunch of other things together with a maxtor harddrive that already had 98 installed on it.

The problem is that 98 is perpetually finding "new hardware" (specifically PCI to PCI Bridge Controller and some other nonsense) I don't seem to have drivers for. Yeah, I ran the installation CD that came with the motherboard. However, every time the OS loads, we do the Hit The Cancel Button dance four times. I've tried everything short of reinstalling.

Anyone know how to disable the Detect New Hardware feature in 98?

YOu can't simply swap in your old hard drive after you install a new motherboard. There are so many components that need drivers on motherboards, the only good way to go about that is a complete reinstall of the OS. That motherboard installation CD was meant to be used with a fresh install of 98.

MS actually handles it ok. To be honest, I'm surpirised you could even boot into Windows with a totally different motherboard and the same hard drive with 98 already loaded. If you wanna see a nightmare, try doing that with Linux.

If it's a Via board, run the new 4 in 1 drivers, I think the most recent officials are 4.38 but you can check it out here..

It should work. 4 in 1's have drivers for the controllers you're referring to.

And F7's right on. If you're lucky. and I have been, the machine will act properly w/o reformatting the hd.Normally,no.

You should still install new official 4 in 1's if a Via board.
