Angry Practice makes perfect....Sure...

I've been playing UT for 2 years, and i've been struggeling the whole time while playing. each and every day i play thinking i will somehow get better. I just found the stelth servers about 4 weeks ago, and my hopes of getting better got a whole lot smaller. seeing greyblood and Recon killing me with ease over and over again is enough to drive anyone insane. Sure i do good some days but thats with new newbies.

Practice makes perfect huh... well i have enough reason to say it doesnt. i've beat the bots to Inhuman with increased skill and alertness, but it doesnt matter, i'm getting killed each time i enter the server.

They say you get better by playing online, well you cant learn if you cant live long enough to.

I know alot of "you" have been killed many times before, but many of them have gotten a whole lot better from what i've heard.

What does it take to get better, i'm willing to do anything, after all this i'm still a noob, what do i do????

"Does this belong in boot camp??"

I have been playing a long time too...some players (like me) will never be in the elite crowd. It's a fact and I keep trying to better my game anyway. Find that niche in game, that you enjoy most and work it. Maybe you need to look at what you can do, and not dwell on what you can't do. Others here will probally have some good pointers for you.

Just keep playing here and you'll get better even if you're getting owned all the time. Take breaks and spectate to learn the maps (because knowing the map and being good at translocating makes a BIG difference) and playing styles..just keep at it and you'll improve. And don't take it too seriously either

I look at myself as a target and I've been playing longer than you.

And you're only 14 years old, you'll learn.

Spectate Spectate Spectate! Watch closely, take notes. Learn to predicte your opponents' moves. Record demos and watch them back, looking to what you could do differently. Pick a weapon to learn. Learn it well. Play some instagib, it'll improve your aim. Read this if you haven't already.

Freakish is right, since I've been here I've seen improvement in my game. You'll only be fooled by the same tricks so many times.

Okay, I only got addicted to UT about two weeks ago. I cry because I suck... maybe I should wait a while longer to determine if I do or don't.

The game is played much differnent on all servers. I played a lot on Dm w/ mods servers... and we had unlimited ammo. People would just never stop shooting.....

One last thing... there are many of the same people that play on this server, but still, everyone has different ways of playing. So am I supposed to spectate each person. And even if I do, I'll probly just get them mixed up in the feild.

just watch the players that kick your butt or score a lot..watch the offense and watch the defense..after a few games you should have an idea of who the better players are. they're the ones to watch. and if they sit and snipe then they're not worth your time.

Yeah, spectating is a good idea. Especially if you spectate me, it'll be good for your ego.

Go to the Boot Camp foram and read all the threads. There are a lot of good things (tricks?) there and they will help you. This is CTF so first figure out what that means and learn how to play the defense and offense.

Playing with people who kick your butt might bruise the ego but don't sweat it. Keep playing with the better players and don't go for the easy out. In a month they won't seem as scary as they did the first day. In two months you should know most regs and know what they do and what they expect from you.

Another reason to join the playground

I appreciate all the help you have given me, i'll spectate more, play more, and try to memorize the maps.

Thanks for all the help you've given me, i'm pretty sure you'll be seeing a whole lot me of me.

I've only played one map with you Nova, but going on that and assuming it's how you usually play, I'll try to give some advice...
You seemed a little hung up on fragging. A couple of time you actually chased me around in the middle when there were far more interesting targets, like my teamate who had your flag. When you play CTF the only thing that matter is the flags. I'll post a pic of the ngWorld stats from that game to give you a better look... You'll notice you had no flag caps, made no flag pickup attempts, and no flag kills. Now ngWorlds stats are hardly the best measure of team play, but those numbers mean that for the 20 or so minutes you were in the game, you had almost no involvment with the flags and so you weren't focusing on the right things. If you look at my numbers you can see that even a sucky player can at least make a difference. I may have been fragged 20 times, 6 of those times when I had the flag, but at least I was near a flag, whether it was mine or yours, making somewhat of a difference for the whole match.

Anyway, all I'm saying is that you are focusing on the wrong thing. Killing and avoiding being killed isn't what you need to work on, it's teamwork.
Dan

BTW this isn't an attack or anything, I think you honestly just didn't realize this. Some people, like some other guy who was on my team that game ( who will go un named ), are intentionally useless, ie. camping in the middle with the speed relic.

If you want to get better, try these things:
  • Play some practice matches on your own machine. Pick a map, add some bots (5-9, but pick an odd number) with average skill. AND SET THE GAME SPEED AT 75%. This gives you time to watch what the bots do and practice your skills with less pressure. Once you start winning up the bot skill a notch until you handle them at Inhuman. Once you can do that, up the speed by 5% and repeat. Do this with many maps and don't always grab the same weapons.
  • Record demos of all of your online games and watch them afterwards. See what you were doing and what wasn't working. While you watch try to focus on your environment not what you were trying to kill while you played the game. The point of this exercise is to develop an awareness of what's going on around you. The previous exercise helps build your weapon skills.
  • You're obviously already doing this, but read these forums. There is a lot of good advice here. Just don't try to read it all at one sitting or you'll get bored with it and you won't remember it all. Do a little bit at a time, just stick with it.
  • You've heard this, but practice and give it time. None of us became instant gods when we installed the game. We've just gotten to the point where we don't think too much about what we're shooting anymore -- we think about the overall match now and it makes a huge difference.

Good luck, and I just want you to know, we're all counting on you.

Don't forget to HAVE FUN too. No point in playing at something that just annoys you.

To record a demo you open console and type

demorec(space here) and whatever you want the filename to be

so:

E.g. demorec demoofnova

to stop recording:

stopdemo

to play it back:

demoplay(space) and the filename

E.g. demoplay demoofnova

SOMETHING I NEVER THOUGHT OF....
Knowing the maps. Its great to know. You learn pretty fast but still, its good to know where stuff is, and where the other team is of course. Don't just get to know how the players move, watch which hallways or paths they take.

I recorded my first demo last night. Lets just say I couldn't follow what he was doing.

I just play to have fun, I never try to win. So like people said just have fun, don't play to the point where it frustrates you (is that how you spell frustrate?)
