New game with Unreal Engine

I thought some of you might enjoy this post I read in another forum (permission granted by poster to repost here).

Subject: I Don't Understand Reality

Good Evening:

Nope. Still don't understand reality.

The US Army has released its first online computer game to the general public. Called "America's Army," it consists of several games in which you learn how to be a soldier, then participate in reality-based missions. The game (which cost $6.3 million of your tax dollars to produce) uses the Unreal engine to produce excellent graphics and gameplay (sorry, it's PC only), and is scrupulously true to life: you will run out of ammo very quickly if you fire indiscriminately, and you must proceed with careful planning first and extreme caution on the battlefield if you want to survive. The game has won rave reviews from gamers trying it out at the E3 convention.

The US Army is giving the game away for free *AND* offering free gameplay online on their servers. They thought this would be good free publicity.

Oops.

400,000 hard-core gamers have overwhelmed the servers, first to download the game, and then to play with and against each other. The US Army has unwittingly entered the online game publishing industry. They have already been forced to triple the number of servers dedicated to the task of making computer geeks (most of whom will never be fit enough to join the Army) happy with their gameplay. They will have to add more servers. At taxpayer expense, of course.

Granted, keeping computer gamers glued to their computer screens is vital to the defense of our nation. Well, the Army thinks that way, so it must be true. Granted, "America's Army" seems to be an excellent product. Granted, I'm very backward in my thinking. But still--I keep having this insane notion that we would be better served by better weapons.

But what do I know? I don't understand reality.

Like any corporation the Army has to advertise. I'm sure they are hitting plenty of 13, 14 year olds which was their aim.

With all the press around about how violent video games are I find it extremly ironic that our own US Army releases a game that can be downloaded by anyone of any age that trains your for fighting a war yet the media doesn't say squat about it.

God ****ing bless america.

I've already downloaded it and run it. It looks pretty. The program tries to hook up with the internet so set your firewall rights. I'm just a little concerned there might be a backdoor in the program. It's an irresistable way to load a trojan horse. It is free of course. 200+ Mb dl.

ok, hang on a second.

Hmmmm... ...sicko older brother... ...sister relationship... ..."enemy's base is down"... sequel #1... sequel #2.... sequel #3.... ...ok, DONE.

Okay, I see the parallel.

You're saying that America's Army proves that the side with the best graphics cards and fastest internet connections wins, right?

I assume this is the Unreal engine we already know and love, not a newer version, like we'll be seeing with UT2002?

As far as the firewall settings, could you be more explicit? I have a router that keeps me safe from incoming, but don't know about outgoing.

Download the ten individual segments from NVIDA, plus the little program to glom them together then realize that there is an eleventh section not directly linked on the page (though I imagine that they've fixed that by now).

I got the thing to run, completed training, but never got on a game server.

Doofus;

This is the new Unreal Warfare engine.
It looks pretty damned good, too.
