Zero Tolerance
This story can be found at http://www.tonguetied.us
A New Hampshire high school student who was told his photo of himself with a shotgun was inappropriate for the school yearbook has threatened to sue the school unless it backs down, reports The Associated Press. Blake Douglass argued that the picture of him with his skeet-shooting shotgun over his shoulder was the same as other students’ pictures of themselves with musical instruments or other hobby-related items. Officials at Londonderry High School rejected it, however, saying the image violated its zero-tolerance policy against guns. They say the school is prepared to go to court to defend its decision. In an interview with the Manchester Union Leader, Douglass describes how teachers and administrators even confiscated his gun enthusiast magazines when he took them to school.

I am not a gun enthusiast by any stretch of the imagination, but that is pretty stupid of the administrators. Schools are over-reacting to Columbine hype in a number of places.
They have the right to restrict what images appear in the year book to some degree, but hunting and other gun sports are part of life New Hampshire, and they should not exercise the right in this case. If the photo had a context that suggested killing human beings it might be different. Zero tolerance policies, and other law and rules that prohibit taking circumstances into account are usually stupid.

I know it's post #410 but I couldn't help it due to the irony here, radio
New Hampshire's motto is "live free or die" taken from the famous words from their homeboy John Stark who was a biggie in the Continental Army back in the revolutionary war days when we were fighting the British. I guess the third option that Stark missed is to accept that your school won't let you run a picture of your skeet shooting gun. The kid should take up cooking and see what they say about that...
