Flat Panel vs. CRT Monitor?

I look at her as often as I can, she's the first thing I see when I wake UP in the morning and usually the last image in my brain before I fall asleep...but now I'm getting tired of her body, I feel like I need to upgrade to a thinner, sleeker body. Of course I'm talking about my monitor!

Anyone have any guidance on gaming with an LCD flat panel display? I'm looking at 17" and 18" LCD flat panel displays right now, and I'm noticing in the specs from various makers like planar, viewsonic, etc. that there is a "response time" of 25-30 milliseconds

How does this compare with the "response time" of a trusty-but-energy-hogging big box monitor with a cathode ray tube, such as my current one? Am I better off sticking with CRT or should I go flat panel?

For pure Gaming, CRT. But, for anything not terribly image-sensitive (ascii porn comes to mind), LCDs are great. LCDs are getting better and better for gaming, so you might wanna try one out first.

Personally, I have both an LCD and a rarely-used CRT .. but my current ATI drivers are so buggy on their multi-monitor support, that I only have one plugged in right now.

In general, if you have the desk space, I'd say use one of each, if your budget and video card can support it.

Thx creeper, I've decided to stick with crt and upgrade my video card for the immediate future instead of going with a panel. It became an $80 vs $500 decision fairly quickly....

I got a geforce4 from bestbuy...w00t!! Not only can I now play with dynamic lighting and decals turned on, but the evga model I got installed just about as simply as one could ask for. I've gotta thank Doofus for that one too.

lol idol, disco may come back someday, if so I suppose you'll be prepared...

Oooooh thx Viper, from your link:

We know the fasted LCD today have a 16ms response time. CRT monitors on the other hand have a response time less than 1ms. For this reason many hard core gamers still prefer a CRT monitor to a LCD.

that hitachi panel looks sweet btw, monitorsdirect.com looks like one awesome place to nab a new monitor, would've improved my matrix to $80 vs $400 so I'll keep my eye on it

GamePC really liked that Hitachi.

Excerpted from Newbie vs. Veteran : Albatron and Hitachi 17 Inch LCD Displays
After firing up some games on this monitor, it became glaringly clear that the Hitachi CML174 is the best gaming LCD we've ever seen. No questions about it. Considering we've reviewed more LCD monitors than other websites, and we've seen a lot of really great LCD screens come through our offices, being able to thoroughly sweep the competition within the first few minutes is pretty amazing. Gaming performance is simply fantastic. Color reproduction is great and there is for the most part no pixel blurring that we can even see. Even compared to Hitachi's previous generation CML181 monitor, this new CML174 model is improved in the gaming department. We simply can't say enough good things about it.
