Space Shuttle Explodes

Just crossing the news now... The Space Shuttle Columbia lost contact with NASA at 9am ET on it's way to a 9:17am landing. It was over Texas. Film shows it breaking up over Texas and there are reports of impacts in the area of Palestine TX.

God rest their souls.

It doesn't look good from the video. The shuttle clearly broke up. I fear the worst.

Officials are saying that terrorism is about 99.9% unlikely.

When the shuttle launched, a piece of debris from the external fuel tank struck the shuttle. It is pure speculation but they are examining what, if any damage it might have incurred at that time.

to me it seems that the heat sheild failed and it burned up when they were landing

from msnbc http://www.msnbc.com/news/857733.asp?0cv=CA00

Columbia was at an altitude of 200,700 feet over north-central Texas at a 9 a.m., traveling at 12,500 mph when mission control lost contact and tracking data.

my deepest condolences to the astronauts friends and families as well as Israel and India

Very sad.

I remember watching the Challenger at work. Thinking of all of the school children watching it explode.
