Civ III
Has anyone played this game? I'm thinking of getting it, since Server 3 is even emptier than usual lately, and the other pub servers (1 and 4) have total **** rotations and really bad players.
If you don't think Civ III is any good, would you recommend something similar? I've played Alpha Centaury and loved it. I'm looking for something in that genre, not Strategy a la Age of *** or Warcraft or turn based stuff like Heroes of M&M (great series tho) Thanx for any reviews/suggestions. ![]() |

Warcraft 3, Age of Mythology, and the like are the Jerry's Kids of Strategy gaming.
Civ III is a great game Black. Other great Strategy games: Medieval: Total War (the best strategy game of all time) Stronghold & Stronghold: Crusader |

CivIII is okay but CivII was better (the original, not Test of Time or Call to Power). I found CivIII to be too limiting in that it forces you to play the same way as the AI: expand aggressively into every available space and make lots of treaties and trades with the other civs. Any game where I didn't do that I fell way behind in tech and military might, even on the easy setting. I've heard that some of these issues might be fixed in the Play the World expansion but I haven't tried that yet.
Medieval: Total War looks great but I haven't tried that yet either. Still waiting for Jerry to have a telethon to help me finish up Warcraft III. ![]() Cheers, Salyavin |

hehe W3 is a great game in it's own right. but I don't think it fits into the "Strategy" gaming genre.
Now Sal, if you were to get Medieval: Total War, I can guarantee you would be impressed. Just set aside plenty of time to play it because it IS an addiction. ![]() |

I prefer Shogun: Total War better. Japanese swords and shields are cooler!

Thanks for the input all. I'll probably go get it tonight, or sometime soon.
UT just isn't intellectually stimulating anymore. I think I need a regnight or something. Or maybe I'll go and do something foolish like join a clan... ![]() |

Well, I bought it. Kicks serious ass so far.
Its really really difficult. I have a feeling I'll be spending weeks if not months getting to know all the intricate details in this game. One little hicup is having the Americans as a possible civilization choice, along with the greek, japanese, zulu, romans, etc... Doesn't really make sense, considering how young the country is compared to the others. |

yeah americans great special unit F15's and i was thinking the exact same thing
i play as babylon the scientific (1 free tech every time u advance) and religious (no anarchy between governments) is a great combanation tip on governments get to democracy and use that but if u have to wage war later in the game make sure u get communism (just in case) democracy gets loads of civil disorder in war time and 1 unit draft per city per term while communism has no disorder during war time and 3 drafts allowed per city early in the game republic for pease time monarcy for war time |

if you have few cities spread out over large areas, communism is the way to go. It'll minimize corruption in cities that are far from your capital

Civ III great game.
I have spent months with this one. I tend to play for a cultural victory, seems more satisfying, rather than military victory. Egyptians are good for this type of victory. I am currently playing on Regent difficulty but I am going to try next one up. |

I tend to stick with democracy as soon as I get it.
This tends to keep the cash flow in the black. As I mentioned before, I try not to use military unless I have to. If I have to, then I always resolve within 3-4 turns. Last edited by Sludge_McBain; 01-24-2003 at 09:42 PM. |

i keep army to a minimum grab democracy while keeping the science reserch high so i make up for lack of army with strength of units also building more cities helps build marketplaces and banks i all cities (and dont forget wall street) then the science buildings
