Valve releases useful character design guide

Valve Software has released a character art guide for artists aiming to contribute assets to its upcoming free-to-play real-time strategy game Dota 2. In addition to seeing their work within the game itself, item makers will receive a split of the proceeds from sales in the in-game store. Normally, we wouldn’t cover modding resources like this, but the guide is one of the clearest overviews of basic character design concepts we’ve seen. In addition to providing a concise introduction to the importance of a clear silhouette, value patterning and a coherent colour palette, the guide explores ideas of rest and detail and of evaluating assets in context. Backed up by real examples But perhaps most importantly, it provides before-and-after examples from Valve’s own characters, showing at a glance how these concepts are applied in practice. Once that's done - open up PS go to : "window" tab then to "extensions" - check on painter wheel to put a check mark on it and there you go

Value, or lightness, varies vertically along the color solid, from black (value 0) at the bottom, to white (value 10) at the top. Neutral grays lie along the vertical axis between black and white. Decide what is in light and what is in shadow and don't mix them up. Two values, but if they are well thought out and designed and drawn they can look totally real. Try to keep everything simple to begin with and focus on these three rules 1) Shapes (Composition, silhouette and/or correct drawing). Just practice a lot of drawing from life and from ref. 2) Values (Let just focus first on get the lighting correctly via monochromatic or achromatic, then you can apply some colors as you advance further in your illustration process. Trust me, this will work. For exercises and more tips on values go see -Values exercises study shade and -Colors VS Values tips and technique 3) Edges (Soft/Hard and lost) In real life most edges look soft because our eyes are constantly moving. An edge will only assume its sharpness if we specifically focus on it. Therefore, it is best to keep the edges soft in general unless you want to draw attention to a certain feature as is the case with the focal area.
