View Full Version : Fake Backdrop Irregular Problem

I have been working with the editor building maps and I decide to put a sky box in and do teh fakebackdrop on a big empty cube that sits above a hallway. One would have expected to look up and see the sky box. Well you sort of do.
The problem is you can also see anything in the map that is above the roof of the hall you are in. So a room a distance away which is much higher shows up like a hole in the sky.
Now the new editor is different than the old one so I am wonding if there is a simple fix for this.
If not I 'll have to add a bunch of hardware brishes to construct the roof top which the player won't be able to see anyways (what a waste).
Thanks in advance

Close editor, load it up again.
Its a weird one (i think i know what your talking about).
When something is added that it doesnt like (98% of things) when you travel into the void around your map, you will see HOMS and your whole level.

The problem is not in the editor but in the game. Here is a screen shot of the problem.

The dark square areas are in another part of the map and stretch higher than the current room, but remain behind the fake backdrop. Since the rooms are in no way connected across the top I don't see why the far room would be seen through the sky (fake backdrop).
I have the feeling this just means going back and building the roof top. Looking at some of the maps included they did something similar (BR-Anubis has a massive roof top area the player never sees). I think this may just be a problem with the new UT2K3 engine and how it draws things.
Still hoping there is a work around though. It would save me many hours of work.

Well thanx anyway. I'm sure someone else may stop by with an idea or two. I think there are enough mappers here to solve just about any map / editor problem.

Hole in the skyyyyyyyy. Take me to heeeaveeeen.
Ok, let me just try to clarify what the problem is before I make suggestions... So you have a fake backdrop poly between the room you're in there, and the rooms across the way? And you don't want to see those rooms, just the sky? Well it would make more sense if you could see them since they are higher up in the sky, so maybe you should just model the walls around them... but if you really want to not see those rooms, you can just put an anti portal where the fake backdrop poly is and it will block those rooms from drawing ( it might create a HOM though... i dunno, but it's worth a try ). Hope that helps ( assuming I even understood the problem ).

Yeah. I had that idea too just tried it. No such luck.
I just can't cheat this one. I'm going to have to build the exterior and roof structures. New game engine, new problems.
Thanks for the feed back though.

Hm. This might be a stupid question, but those rooms that appear out of nowhere... are they in the same zone as the hallway?

No they are in a different zone.

but similar question. Does your sky have an alpha map to it?
