this is to all those cable folks out there...
Ever since @home died and we made the big fatty switch and got our service interrupted for 3 days, my internet has been a bit fudgy. Meaning...fairly often I'll all of a sudden not be able to access webpages I normally access. I can easily fix this with a release/renew of the IP ("repair" is what it's called in Windows XP), but I wonder why this is happening with such frequency. It never happened before the cable switch. I'm running XP, and am behind a cable/dsl router (the linksys type). Anyone else have this problem? It's just an annoyance and no big deal...but annoyances can often be dealt with. :)

Sorry-- no help but I couldn't resist: for the right money, I know a guy who knows a guy who can make any annoyance go away...
Small bills only, please...

ehehe..something in my favor!! my connection isn't jumpy then..bring it on!!! (just lemme know when you're getting laggy so I can come out of hiding) :D
and my problem is only for surfing the web (not AIM, ICQ, UT, etc)..doesn't really show up anywhere else (well ok battlenet is fudgy sometimes, but it's always been that way).

hmm..my ICQ is so slow at times, I just shut it down and start over. I also have incredible lag since Excite originally "quit". They are still carrying my internet connection ( & being paid more for it ) and its crappier than ever. So its hard to fathom..My weapons seem to produce a lot of flash...just no bang your dead. Anyway thats my complaint. I hope Cox Internet is so much better or I may have to change internet servers :(

In all honesty, I am not sure that one has to do with the other. Your release/renew/repair is a DHCP thing, and unless your provider is pushing around DNS servers, I don't see that making a difference. Here's why:
You are running the Linksys router, which is handing out a 192.168.X.X (right?) IP address to your PC. It is also handing out various other pieces like DNS server, default gateway, blah blah blah... Your address isn't changing... The router knows your address because it gave it to you.
Here is what I suspect:
Your cable jerks have realized that you are running a router (all they gotta do is look at your MAC address of the router and they know) and so they are feeding something across to "bump" it. Call it a mild form of hacking. Why you ask? In most cases, routers are not "legal" for you to use on cable systems unless you are renting theirs...
Anyway... I could be wrong, and it may stabilize... Give it a week... then try putting your PC directly off the cable modem. If it is still giving you probs then, call the company.

That makes sense... I couldn't understand how it would be the cable when my release/renew is straight to the router. But, since the only variable that changed was the cable service, it seemes that had to of been it. Perhaps if I have my router mimic a different mac address? Like..that of my computer...
I'll see how things go. Worry about it after the holidays. :)
Thanks Kingster!

I think your wrong man. I remember calling up @home and they helped me set it up. Maybe they've changed their policies, but from what I hear its legal.

OK..let me explain this to you guys, since you're all not getting this. At&t is a company, that went bankrupt. We have their product. Their product isnt cutting it. So..err.. ok..let me explain it to you this way..If a dog is suffering.. you take take thier pain away...It's no different with a product. The truth of the matter is that, as of late, at&t has been hurting pretty bad..They've suffered long enough...It is time to lay them to rest!

the latest is that AT&T sold their cable (tv/internet) to Comcast, but sort of called it a merger (the new company is Comcast-At&T or the reverse). I'm assuming they won't want to intterupt service... I'm HOPING they won't wanna interrupt service. Bastards.
I wish RoadRunner was up here.

Thats not what i thought had happened.. I thought excite @Home went bankrupt and at&t tried buying a portion of them. i haven't heard anything about at&t hurting except their broadband service. My dad had their broadband/phone service thingy (the one with the satellite dish) and that went out of business.
As far as the internet goes, I got switched to ATT BI (they call it). Its running smooth except for their download cap. But everything seems to be running normal..

Or all you half techys could wake the hell up and just get dsl. DUH
Assuming of course your not out in green acres, where there aint no co round here. In which case, move out of the farmhouse.
Anyone who chooses "really fast...sometimes" over "fast consistently" has much better medication than I!!!!!!
Hope this adds to your frustration to make you an easy target. :D

Yep. I would. In a heartbeat. What's cool is I only live about 8600 feet from the CO. Unfortunately, that CO is owned by an SBC affiliate - Ameritech, who has decided that they will not bring DSL to the area (hence, no installation of the necessary DSLAMs), because they cannot compete with other providers (I will not purchase DSL from Ameritech when it becomes available - probably TDS Metrocom).
Since Ameritech owns the building, there is no choice. I can get ISDN through them, but guess what... That's going WAYYYYY slower than my 1.5M/256K cable. I think I'll keep my cable (unfortunately) until I can get DSL (from a REAL provider - not Ameritech). My cable provider sucks ass - Charter Pipeline. Once again, if I want fast access, no choice.
So, the point I am making is this: One does not have to live in the boonies to only have the choice of cable. One can live in the shadow of an tyrranical emporer known as SBC Ameritech.
Screw SBC and Charter both - they can kiss my left testicle. :D

how fast can dsl go? Before the downgrading I would never get lower than 2mb/sec! I have no idea what recon meant by fast some of the time..It's faster than dsl all the time..er..until now.

Wellll... Here's the thing.
Cable has a major problem with latency and speed. You see, it is basically like ethernet... You sit behind the headend (kind of like a switch) with as many people as are on your section of cable. So you share that entire port off the headend with all those people. Now, in most cases, that port is only good for ~50mbps down and about 15mbps up. So, when you get a lot of heavy users, guess what. Performance goes down, even for us 1.5/256 kids.
That's on the speed side. On the latency side, the headend may not be at max on the speed, but if there are too many packets flowing (not big ones, which are more efficiently routed), then there is a latency problem because the headend is not able to keep up. This can also be caused by too many users.
Cable companies are cheap asses. They don't do anything more than they have to. They WAYYYYYYY oversell their infrastructure, and we users suck it up, especially if we have no other choice.
On to DSL. Can the same thing happen to DSL? Yep. Sure can. But, here's the thing. All the DSL equipment (except for the stuff in your house) is in a central location, the CO. Easy to upgrade that infrastructure. You need more connections? Fine. Add the equipment.
Cable on the other hand... There is one line flowing past my house. 20 of my neigbors are on it. It hits another line, that another 80 people are on. Then it hits the port in the headend, from there it is fiber. Once they throw another 500 people on my section before the headend, guess what - I got suck ass speed and latency.
Right now, it's not a problem for me. It will be, when the 3 new subdivisions around my house start filling up.
