View Full Version : Cliffy B wants to reboot Unreal, Skyrim-style

from thatvideogameblog.com .............. There’s no hiding the fact that Epic Games’ Cliff Bleszinski has been quite outspoken about his love for Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The man loves him some RPG, which is why it shouldn’t necessarily come as a surprise to anyone when he recently said (http://www.oxm.co.uk/36988/bleszinski-id-like-to-reboot-unreal-with-a-skyrim-vibe/) he’d like to reboot the Unreal series with a “Skyrim vibe.” It’d be an odd combination for sure, but then again, Syndicate is being reborn as a first-person shooter, so why not?
“I’ve had all sorts of crazy ideas, like I’d like to reboot the original Unreal with kind of a Fallout or Skyrim vibe where it’s more about exploration than it is about action, with more RPG elements,” said Bleszinski. But the reality of the matter, however, says otherwise, and abruptly ends that train of thought.
“If you could right now double Epic’s team temporarily and just build another game like that I’d love it,” he said, referring to the fact that financial times just won’t let that happen at this time.
“We’re a slave to our success with games like Gears and Infinity Blade,” he added.
I’m a big fan of experimentation, but as much as an RPG-styled Unreal would have me quivering with enthusiasm, and probably have a frenzy of hardcore fans shake the very ground on which Epic’s HQ stands on too, I think the company’s announcement (http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/2011/12/11/fortnite-is-epics-new-game/) during the VGAs, Fortnite, is far more interesting right now, don’t you?

If dingbat wants a new Unreal game, don't make it a f**king reboot

Wait - is this kind of reboot which expanded the original ut99 in practical new ways?
With additional melee animations new alternative rolling dodges and such?
And new additional characters and pawns and weapons also with incredible melee (no 3rdp!)?
And a outstanding world growing system and online coop battles and all?
Now that must be a dream - someone please shoot if i wake up!
P.S.: Maybe there were even a way to start a amazing judges(?) carreer
(of course as thug or such in the beginning) and earn ranks or die .. .

Hell no! Thats a fantastic basic concept for a awesome DoomTrooper mod!
The players chose one megacorporation which each had a doomtrooper
and darklegion player variant with special weapons (maybe some class
upgrades to be found on the maps). The doomtroopers of course had
five times the health of the darklegionaires and healed as usual with pickups.
When a round starts two (depending on player count) random (?) players be
upgraded to dommtroopers and fight cooperative against the others.
If a lowey manages to deal damage on em it must be counted to termine
who becomes the next after one doomtrooper died. Thats kinda tricky
logic - you start as zombie and ascend to supertrooper - very cool!
Combined with a perfect map and spawn design (triggerhappy action
to happen) this shalt become a popular game design.
Maybe in ten/or hundred years ... .
P.S.: If someone liked to "steal" "my" "idea" id be truly honoured.
P.S.2: Ill try contacting paradox (mutantchronicles owner by law) and move
them to realize this simple little gem of a game. Maybe they could aswell choose
the unrealengine if they liked .. .

Give me the scenario of Unreal 1, with the whole world to explore in a relatively open style, skills to learn which unlock weapons, enemies and new areas ... that could work for me.
My only problem would be that I am worse than crap at 3rd-person, so unless I could play it all in first-person I'd be stuffed.

Btw - its not necessary to use the MutantChronicles license at all!
Take my latest zombieskin for example and imagine a reskinned spacemarine model.
All whats still needed were the gametype - where the spacemarine started
with instagibrifle and the zombies immediately respawn and they collected
weapons as usual but just not the insta. I will try begging the coder wormbo
to help with this so that soon maps and servers (oc botmatches) could run.

P.S.: Ahrem - theres only a small problem with the
spacemarines twohand anims which sucked
since the zombies model uses none.
P.S.2: Im planning to make the space-
marines fit to the ut afromarines like
the originals to the imperial troops .. .

If he just wants to take the original game and make it a sandbox, he can gtfo

All I want is UT, untouched other than updated graphics.
Capping a flag is an achievement. Killing 40 squirrels in one game is not.
I don't need Facebook, Steam, Origin.. or anyone I'm not playing with that second to know I just got 3 headshots. (Or was just the victim of 3.)
I don't need cars, jets, or hoverboards in a First-Person-Shooter. The requirements are in the title already.
I don't need an open world. I need good, well-paced, balanced multiplayer maps.
I don't need bright lights over the heads of all my teammates, or enemies. My eyes work just fine, thanks.
I don't need a million special effects and over-blown announcer voice-overs. I need a crosshair and a gun.
I don't need another military-clone shooter. For one, I game to escape reality, and for two, we have tons of those already.
Speaking of guns, I don't want to spend 30 hours, and $5.99 online to unlock a weapon. I want to open the game, grab a gun, and go kill stuff.
I don't want to level-up new skills. Aim, movement, and situation awareness are skills. 'Online knitting' is not, and aim, movement, and awareness increase on their own.
I did kinda like ngworld stats, but at the same time, I didn't like what it turned some of us (I fell victim too) into.
I want a game with an easy, accessible editor. It doesn't have to be fancy, it has to be easy to get plenty of mappers.
I want a game that people can run their own servers with. The diversity of UT servers was a huge strength for it's longevity. (p.s... linux server required.)
I don't mind a ported game, so long as it's developed for PC, then ported to consoles. Netcode isn't (quite) rocket science.. let the consolers play with PC gamers, if they like being slaughtered. (But probably have console-only servers they don't all run away.)
Sigh.. I must be getting old. :p

It reads as if you want one of the open source shooters, Creeper.
Red Eclipse (http://www.redeclipse.net/) is the closest match to that list I've found, so far, though is still a bit rough (I think that's universally true of OSS FPSs.)
It reads as if you want one of the open source shooters, Creeper. :scratch:Or the original UT as UT3 paled in comparison to its predecessors
Hell, people wanted the Enforcer back, but not as the little brother of the AssaultRifle

Unreal I can see them doing some of this, UT HELL NO!
UT I could see them doing some COD stuff with, that would be nice. I mean ranks and achievements wise. It is always nice to have obsurce things to work on while you play.
Yes I am an achievement-whore. What gave it away??

+1 on that. Simple is the best when it comes to UT.
If I want to play Borderlands or Rage I'll play Borderlands or Rage.
