from thatvideogameblog.com ....................... Epic may well be more known for their Gears of War franchise these days than their Unreal Tournament beginnings, but the company isn’t the kind that forgets where they coming from.

That said, dev pres Mike Capps has confirmed that the team isn’t currently working on any new Unreal Tournament title. “Unreal and Unreal Tournament continue to have a huge influence on the studio here, even though we’re not currently working on an Unreal IP project,” Capps stated in an interview with Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/sites/johngaudiosi/2011/09/20/epic-games-president-mike-capps-looks-to-the-future/) ( via (http://www.vg247.com/2011/09/21/epic-no-new-unreal-game-in-the-works/) ).

Given that Epic are currently working on five different titles, it’s a shame to know that this once-popular series isn’t among them. The last game in the franchise, 2007′s Unreal Tournament III, is probably the last example of arena-based multiplayer that can be found on PS3 and 360. We’d like to see more.

I read it as they weren't currently allocating resources to that IP, but that doesn't mean it's not going to be. (they need to show off engine updates, same as always, don't they?)

Plus I'd rather they NOT work on anything Unreal with 4 other projects going at the same time.

I don't think they really understood what made the previous unreals so great when they released UT3. UT2004 allowed an immense variety in gameplay. You had your fast twitch gametypes (DM, iCTF, TAM), your drawn out strategic ones(ONS), and your medium-paced ones (CTF, BR).
You could play any of these gametypes, get bored with them and move over to another one. You'd maintain a general skillset, but use it on a totally different focus.
vCTF in UT3 was pretty awesome, though. It's the only gametype I enjoyed.

It was also the support of the Mod community that meant a great deal too.

Unfortunately, there were problems supporting the mod community. Launched without file redirect, editor problems, and lack of linux server support.

With the release of the UDK, I think they found where they want their "mod" community. Talent development, engine awareness, and potential game development has a lower cost of entry/higher potential for rewards with the UDK than a gamebased editor.

It really wouldn't surprise me if Epic gets the rights to anything you make using UDK

They have a pretty clear policy - they get royalties after you've made $50K in sales.
