I'm sure this is common. Every day I play sooner or later the system will lock up. I know it's not the v.c. or drivers and the cpu is not overheating.
BTW I have G.O.T.Y. edition and now it is really messed up so I'm reinstalling it for about the 5th time in 3 weeks!!! Anyone else have trouble like me? Why wasn't this ever fixed?

I've tried delta and non-delta 436 patches so don't know what else to do. It's on a win2k maching with 16 meg video card run at 640x480 res.

Sometimes just re-applying the 436 patch works. Also, popular theory has it that Win2k sucks for gaming. You might consider dula-booting with Win98 or something.

Any reasons 2k sucks for gaming? should support all the stuff 98 does. If I do a dual boot I'll have to reformat and do it all over

w2k should work fine for UT. It is what I have used since the begining and haven't had any problems like that.

Well Kool_Die_Steadily... It had to get nominated as game of the year somehow.. There most definitely WAS an original version.. Might be the copy you have.. Might be win2K, might be a virus.. Eyuch.. I DO know of one virus that had me by the short hairs for a while.. Everytime I'd change levels, it would download a level I already had AGAIN!! Man, that was a pain-o-rama.. Found the solution by accident on night and all is well with the world now.. :D

I'm *pretty* sure the GOTY edition was the same thing, but with the Chaos mod packaged with it.
I might be wrong though.. I think that happend to me once before.

I've noticed this in the last week or two. I'm dowloading boards I know I have (like valley of the giants. everybody has valley of the giants!).
What was the problem and what was your solution? :?:
I have painfully slow dsl at home. It sucks when I know I could be handing out beat downs and all I can do is pick my nose. :(

"When playing online, the game attempts to download a map from the server that I know I already have on my machine." or "When playing offline, the game only plays one map, and refuses to advance to the next map in the list."
In all cases that we have seen, this problem only occurs on machines that are infected by a virus known as "Hybris.Gen". This game is only one of several applications that are known to not work properly on infected machines. Until the virus is cleaned completely from your system, this problem will continue to occur. We recommend completely uninstalling the game (and any other affected programs), and then taking steps to remove the virus from your system. When the virus is gone, reinstall the game and everything should function properly. If you are unsure about removing the virus yourself, we strongly recommend contacting your computer manufacturer for assistance.
For more information on the Hybris virus, please see the following pages:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w95.hybris.gen.html
Please note: Depending on the virus scanner you use, you may need to reinstall WSOCK32.DLL from your original Windows CD. Please refer to your virus scanner or system manufacturer for more information.

I was under the impression that w2k needed to be patched up to work properly in most games. If you are using an AMD system, download their patch as well.

thanks bam bam but I've reformated the drive 3 times now and still happens. Is XP Pro better for games then 2k pro? they use same Kernel..

I get GPF's from time to time. So I think it's Windows. JaC. What are the patches on AMD? Are there patches for CPU's? I have an AMD

Go to amd's site. ( or ms ) All amd's supposedly need to be patched under w2k. I remember how many bad things I heard about this OS for gaming when it was released, but I believe it's now considered one of the best (ms) OS's, when you patch it.
Also never use the term "but it should do this" when referring to compatibility between ms products

With an Amd processor these days the chipsets are to blame not the cpu.
AMD 761 is fairly stable but discontinued, 760 was known to be stable at 4x but other options caused problems. All of the early 760MP's have a known agp bug.
VIA chipsets have so many patches it sometimes takes quite a bit of research or trial and error to find the most stable configuration.
As for SIS...some people like the price/performance ratio and yet some people consider them lower than Via on the stability scale.

Hmmm I like all the new sis chipsets (well new since ddr became mainstream). Havent had any problems, although their driver support isnt very hot. I've had 1 to many headaches with via rushing to put out the latest and greatest, only to find they're flaky on initial release.

I haven't had any experience with SiS personally, so I'll take your word on it. If I were to share my personal preferences you'd probably find that I spend 4-5x as much as any sane person on my gear 8O 8O 8O
