If you find something broken, holler.
Uploads have been disabled. Until I can figure out exactly what I'm going to do for the files we have currently, they will remain available for download, but we will not accept new uploads.

Have you read the private message I sent you?
I'll post it here again anyway:
Hi, I have read the sad news about UnrealPlayground's future and I would like to ask you if it would be possible to copy all the maps from your server to the server of an spanish unreal website: http://gamersmafia.com/ (previously 4unrealers.com). We have been covering the Unreal Scene since 2001 and we would be thrilled to host the maps so that they continue to be available after UnrealPlayground changes to the new server. All the maps will be freely downloadable without registration required and all of our contents are licensed under Creative Commons license so they will continue to be free.
Thanks a lot for all the time you have put into the site.

I have, 2_Face...
To you and the other server admins that have PMd me, I appreciate your offers. One of the biggest issues is getting the files and data regarding them back into a format that is actually usable by you.
One of the things that I have been considering doing is setting up a torrent tracker database and seed system. All other server admins could participate in the seeding via some rsync/ftp magic, as well as allow their own users to contribute, either via torrent, or via ftp. A couple of ways it works:
1. A user wants to upload a file via FTP/Flash/whatever: They plug in the info about the file into a website, then upload the file. The website makes that file available to the other servers and users via torrent, and seeds it out the other servers along with what is essentially an NFO file for addition of the text into their system. All servers would offer the file via direct download, but a person could get the file far faster through the torrent, using all N-number servers that are part of the network.
2. A person creates their own torrent, including their own NFO file in a standard format, then loads that torrent to any of the server networks' trackers. Each server would then immediately start pulling the torrent, and would reseed endlessly.
In talking to a number of hosting facilities, they are fine with this, as it is the sharing of content that is totally legal to do so (Unreal maps).
Or, I could just get the files and data to you guys via a private FTP and let you all figure it out how you each want to do it. If there are any of the server admins out there, feel free to post in here to chat about it.

Wow. Been a long time since i was here too. I don't really do the social thing too much. I read too slow for that. I've downloaded a ton of maps and skins from you guys. I will definitely miss the place. All the things i've downloaded, i do have copies on my harddrive. I prolly should burn all that to disc for archiving purposes since my "source" is going away. :( As for an "unsupported" game...i suppose that's true for official support, but it's well supported by the community, or at least was till recently. I will continue to play as long as there are servers to play on and when there aren't any more, i may host my own :) Thanks to all who have put soooo much work into not only this site, but the content to host on the site.

Did I miss something? I don't usually follow other Unreal related sites, so why do so many people think that U.P. is set to evaporate? The closest I can come up with was a call for people to download and backup maps in the slight chance that the server move could wipe data or make them inaccessible for a while.
I'd really hate to see any good community site, regardless of size, fall into disuse because of some notion that is closing when it is still open.

Dorko,
One of the things that I had said is that I would likely end downloads here on the new server. I just have to kind of watch what kind of a load things get... If I bust bandwidth limits, then there's trouble. If not, I may keep 'em around. I dunno. That said, we have freaking 40+GB if maps on here. Jumpin' Jiminy Christmas. You people need to stop making maps, already. LOL!!!

The torrent/host seed idea seems good, though I do wonder how other legit sites manage to keep out the illegitimate injections. I've never come across anything pirated in my use of torrents, and I always am astounded that it is as such.

Vuze is building a thriving platform for distributing legitimate torrents, mainly trailers and indie releases, but obviously there are plenty of non-legit transfers going on behind that!
As long as someone has control of the tracker and vets all UPloads before they go live it could be kept "clean" - just as the current stock of map files are clean.
I'd quite happily keep a PC "always-on" to keep a selection of maps permanently seeded if you went down the torrent route - I can't guarantee amazing speeds, but ...

DMGF... Actually, the cool thing about it is that most "downloaders" wouldn't have to keep a PC on if they didn't want to. Would it help with the popular stuff? Sure. But with a network of "seed" servers (servers like UP and others), we could push the files to clients at sickeningly fast speeds while keeping our own bandwidth levels down and "balanced". I'm still looking into how to get it going, and whether other sites/groups will follow.

I am looking forward to download all the maps here via Torrent and count me in to seed while I am on my PC.
I would be glad to help because I am a mapper and I know how much it takes to build maps and I dont want to see all that hard work vanish, btw I never contributed to the site because till today I didnt had any way to do so and even today I am jobless so I dont have much money to spare but I would help in what I can.

Sorry for the double post but I have a small suggestion to make.
I know UP go to a more social platform.
But in each member profile could be a space to the member works such maps or mods, I am not asking to host it but yes for a small tab for each member post Links of they works, This way people still can share they works via this side without taking bandwidth since all files would be hosted externally via File Hosting services such File Front, Mediafire and such.
I hope you find this suggestion useful.

It appears that people are still uploding maps to UP... is this now allowed?
Just wondering as I have a number of maps nearing completion but will not upload them here if it is not permitted...

Yeah I have noticed that, If is still allowed please tell me so I can upload here my new maps or I simply instead of uplaoding I can connect all my files here to mediafire.
BTW I have added 2 maps here, but all the download links are external as well the screenshots, this way wont take much sandwich :)

I also would like to know as I will then finish the CTF-Face][2k4 and then upload it here as that map has been gathering virtual dust for ages also I have several maps in various stages of completion that I need to attend to as well.

For now, go ahead. I hate to take away a place for maps just yet. I don't have time to work on sorting the files out for people right now - I've got too much stuff in the works.
For now, uploads have been re-enabled...
