This forum needs a new thread worse than I need a flak cannon, so here it is.

Lately, I've been really getting into the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. For the uninitiated, Discworld is a series of satirical comic fantasy books set on a world which is, in fact, a disc, sitting on the backs of four elephants on the back of a giant space turtle who floats endlessly through space. In short, it's funny british comedy in the fantasy fiction vein.

I've recently picked up and read a good number of the later discworld books, however. Terry Pratchett's writing has become less slapstick and the tales he spins are much more engaging, I've found. "Thud", "Going Postal", and "Monstrous Regiment" have all become favourites of mine, not simply for their humor value (which is excellent) but also for the endearing characters, the wordplay, and the smooth style of writing.

Who else on the boards reads Discworld?

Guilty - every single novel in series.

I'd also suggest the proto-discworld book 'Strata' .

Faves are Clay Feet, Thief of time, Fifth Elephant and Night watch. :joy:

Me also - faves are ... about all of them!

I'm reading Thud! now and loving it.

I have fallen away from them recently but they were definately one of my favourite series a few years back. Very entertaining reading, one of the few authors who would actually have me chuckling while reading a book.

I read them starting as a late teen all the way up until about 10 years ago when I stopped reading as much fiction. There are about 10-15 of them (some paperback, some hardback) sitting on a shelf here somewhere, starting with The Light Fantastic all the way up through the last one I could find in '98/99. I realize he still produces new books quite frequently and intend to step back into them someday...

I agree, great reading for someone who is well read across many fields and interests (as Pratchett tends to fold everything in he can).
