So, we've finally gotten things mostly put together. Here's a short list of what we've accomplished:
Forums up and running
Multiple skins for the forums
Uploads and Downloads are back, with more categories coming shortly
RSS feeds for the forums are running
New smilies!
Forums are faster; with minimal hit to server
A new frontend with all sorts of goodies
What do you think? How are we doing now?

I thought that based on some options that I had seen in the vB settings that this could be done. Apparently I was wrong. No easy nick change. :( Not yet anyway. Sorry!
I miss the black background. Im going blind with this new white, and sometimes I feel like Im browsing BU...
Uhh... you can change your style by scrolling to the bottom of any page and selecting the "UP Classic Style" in the drop-down on the bottom left... Or in your User CP.

i like the latest files window on the front page, but is there a way to tag them so people will know what flavor of ut they are (ut, ut2kx,ut3?), by colour of name or special symbol?

It's about the downloads - in the old version of UP was a little menu on the download page, where you can choose a map by first character of its name - e.g. you can choose all maps beggining with G or F or something. I think it was quite useful. The new design isn't bad - generally is better readable than previous, but if switched to UP classic style sometimes the text has a similiar color as a background (in a forms). But I think you all did a big piece of work. UP is by my opinion one of best Unreal sites. I apologize for my poor english.

Although I think "UP's come a long way, baby!" and its perfect to me...
It would be just be even more perfect if there was a magical button you could press that would send ridiculous amounts of money into ones bank account.
Something like the Easy button from Staples would work ;)
Just call it the UP$ button ;) , get it? UP your $$ :claps:

i tried something, and found something interesting.
if i go to ut2004 CTF page in the map list, fine.
i do a search for CTF-G and i get all the maps from ut2003, ut2004, and ut99 that start with CTF-G, but no vctf, or other issues. i think the search isn't narrowing it's search enough to the ut2004 page i'm on.
otherwise, it DOES find all the CTF-G maps, and finding them should be fast. i'll have to check to see if it orders them by release date or game .

I get the vCTF... And the searches currently are not narrowed to the category you are looking in. I have added the game versions to the categories, so you know what version you are seeing in the results... Previously you would see CTF, but not know if it was for 2K4 or 99.
I'm trying to be helpful here. If you see something just blatantly jacked, lemme know so I can fix it ASAP.

np Kingster.
i was just trying to resolve an issue of not still having the a-c, j-l list of map types for the previous poster (which i detested btw, the list not the poster, caugh)
what i discovered, is that if you are in the CTF- list for 2004, and search for CTF-K, you get a few CTF maps for 2004, and a few vCTF maps as well, and CTF maps that are ut2003 and ut99 specific.
i just thought the search would narrow itself to the UT2004 CTF window i was in, and if it did, that would be awesome, but hardly necessary since the results are organized so well.
"thank you for the work done thus far " would be a gross understatement
if i may ask a question. will the search include the comments (of which there are none right now). since many mappers give short descriptions, and i hope people who comment on the maps will use words that better describe the level.
100+ published maps on UP! yeah! Lord_Simeon i think that will be noticed for some time, hehe

It might not be as esthetically appealing as the old download page, but this is definitely more practical. Who wants good looks when you can't properly find a map like in the old site. And now you can post COMMENTS!!! Yiipeeee!!1
One little thing: when you get the time, can you put the map size in a more permanent location? Right now it's at the end of the map description, and they always vary in length, so if map size is an issue for me, I gotta find the end of each comment. It would be cool if map sizes would have their own column and be sortable.

Very nice - all round I say it's better than it was before.
Only problem I've found is pages sometimes won't load fully, it's as almost as if I manually press the "Stop" button before a thread is fully displayed.
For instance, first time I opened this thread, it only loaded as far as Zinia's reply.
When I pressed reload, it got as far as Spargo's comment, and the third time it only got as far as displaying 3DTexuriser's reply.
(AngelMapper was listed as the most recent reply before I opened the thread :))
Might be my connection ballsing UP or it might be something more serious, I thought it worth mentioning just on the off-chance that it is summat you guys need to keep an eye on. :)

Looking forward to see this finished.
The mainsite still looks like a fresh installed cms software. I really think noone need the some of the offered features (calender etc.). I actaully rather see the old site in that new design. But I don't know what you're planing to do to it. So I'll just sit and watch the clouds...

There's one thing I didn't realized had changed until now. (And btw, thanks Kingster for changing the map category name to "OSM Adventure") The map descriptions used to be based on HTML, so I could italicize, bold, and generally format those descriptions to look purdy. Now it looks confusing.
Before I change my map descriptions to non-HTML, I wanted to ask if this is a feature in progress. (?)
EDIT: Oops. Linkage to forums, forum content, maps from other sites is broken. Ugh. Don't suppose there was a plan to change the address back to the old, was there? ("forums.unrealpl" vs "unrealpl.../forums") Sigh. I'll go hunt and update linkage manually.

The intention was to make everything editable with the standard forum editor.
As to the linking? I knew that would cause issues, especially with changing how the downloads work. I've fixed all the links that were internal to the forums, but if you have links externally, you'll need to update them. Sorry.

Go to http://www.unrealplayground.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions...
All the way at the bottom, you can change the skin you're using. Also, if you have made Firefox appear to be a mobile browser of some sort via a development plugin of some sort, turn that off, as the forums are automatically detecting mobile browsers. I suspect this last to be your issue since if you've logged in through IE and you aren't seeing it, then it's not your default skin.

Thx, King, it worked. Though it didn't at first. I'll just explain all the steps I took.
I clicked on your link in Firefox. Took me to a mobile-looking page (Pic). Not much I could do there so I pressed "Online", but it took me to a blank page and it didn't change anything. I clicked on the link in IE and it took me to my options page and there I switched the skin from "Default style" to "2008 style" (yes, I use the 2008 style). Saved changes. Opened UP in Firefox. Still no changes, so I clicked on your link again, went back to that page in the pic and pressed "Logout" instead, and logged back in. Now it worked.
I'm sure there was an easier way to do this, but that's how it all went down...
For posterity...

The site is looking great! All the colors match well, and most everything seems to be linked correctly. It's easier, more professional. GJ!
The best site just got better!
There is just a few questions I would like to ask, if I may? :o
1.What is reputation?:weird: :D
2.On the main page, at the bottom. It gives you the latest posts. They have the first poster, and date of the original thread. Then on the right it will show the last person, and date (today) they posted.
Now when you go to New Posts. It will not show the date when the first was posted. Is there a way to put the date of the original thread? or am I missing something?
The reason I brought that up is because, there will be someone that will post on a 3 year old thread that I really didn't want to get caught posting on. :D
3.This one has been brought up, but when you post in a thread, then go to new post. The one you just posted on will not show back up. Is this meant purposely?
4.I've been having trouble getting the pages to load all the way without hitting the refresh button a few times. Also downloading I only get a few kb's before it fails. Does anyone else have this problem? Is the firewall thing still in place as it was on the old site?
I'm thinking I may have an external modem that is the problem. I had forgotten about that thing. It may be all my troubles? :hammer:
When I bought it, there was a note about a built in firewall. It has no way of turning it off that I know of? I will test this theory out, and see if it is the problem. It's a 56net, if anyone is familiar?
Edit: Also I've been getting a lot of 500 internal server errors?
Thanks

1. Rep is a rating on people. I've disabled negative rep (it gets used improperly) but you can "reward" someone for a particularly good post. Click on the √/X button under the person's pic, and give em a point.
2. We used to show the date of the original post in New Posts as well. I'll look into adding that back.
3. If you are the last post in a thread, the forum considers that you have read the thread. People have talked about the new method to mark threads read and have asked to go back to the old method. I want to try this for a bit longer, as I think that it has some real merits:
If you visit the forums, and read only one new post, then get distracted, come back 20 minutes later, the other posts will show up as older than your last visit, but still unread. This happens to me all the time, especially when I am responding at length to a post, or work interrupts play, or...
The old method was based simply on the time set in your most recent UP cookie. You had 20 minutes to read the forums from the moment you got there. If you happened to use FireFox to monitor the newsfeeds, then you would set the cookie time every time your FF would attach to check for new threads. Then, when you got to the site, and clicked "New Posts" then it wouldn't show anything.
The new method allows for faster display of the forums, as it can cache what you haven't read, just for you. It builds the thread display internally, stores it, and dumps it at one shot when you show up. That way the display is faster.
4. That's bizarre. The only thing that I can think of is that PHP is trying to dump stuff too fast to your system and the 56K stuff can't hack it. I'll poke around and see if I can find anything.
the 500s are my fault. I'm moving stuff around on the server, and that prevents the server from fulfilling requests.

Got one thing you might want to mull over.
You know the list on the side front page that has nervana in it, the top most maps.
Well it is rather useless since those maps will never be topped because we are now up to UT3.
I would probably do just one years worth UT99, so all the other maps get a spot, and possibly keep an all time list elsewhere.

^ What outpt said.
I've seen this one, I don't know if it's just Firefox. (default skin)
The post editing page sometime does not load with proper Message: window bounds in place. The results can be anything from the right edge of the Message: window bleeding over the border to the Smilies box encroaching entirely into the body of the text or the text bleeding out into the Smilies box.

Well the ads are depressing, but at least you can minimize their little window so you don't have to see them. :)
And if they are helping to save UP, then who really cares?

I think the couple ads on the front page are a fine idea. They're minimal and non-obtrusive. In a way, it even classies UP the front page. :D

After breaking in this site for a few months, my only real complaint is the map file/download system. It was so much more intuitive the way it was before, and to be honest, I think the old way would best any other route you could go with it.
In any case, still like the site.

Ok got a request. I would like to be able to subscribe to a forum based on new threads. I think the current subscription system is either confusing me or is buggy. I get updates for threads that haven't been updated. One thread has been emailed to me half a dozen times yet it's still the same last post.
I just want to be able to subscribe to the Level Design forums, and Birthday forums so that I can stay on top of new threads. Thread subscription can handle the reply updates wouldn't you think? ;)

I noticed something that may already have been mentioned thast is annoying to me.
When i go to reply to a thread...sometimes the utube video in thread begins playing while i am trying to type. Is there a way to stop them automatically playing when i am replying to a thread?
It begins to play the first video on page you are on without pressing the play button.
Anyone else have this and if so...does it annoy anyone else? or is it just me?

Re: the notification thing, I've noticed that certain threads won't set to being 'read' even when I've entered them multiple times. This is especially in certain 'hidden' areas at the top, but it does occur throughout the board. I tried fiddling with my cookies for UP to no avail, so I can see how the database might be having issues with subscribed thread notifications too (I don't use the thread subscription as I am a habitual web browser as it is).
Re TexasGtar: Youtube vids playing automatically.. Most likely this isn't going to be something that's in the UP code though, it will be either a setting in your browser or in flash itself. I checked and I don't see a simple way to tell youtube's code or flash itself whether or not to specifically autoplay Youtube videos, maybe someone else has an idea. Your web browser & version, and flash version would be helpful.

i have ie 6.
I don't think i have flash? Not sure. They do not play when i open the thread. There i have to click to get them to play. It's when i reply to a thread or try to post in one....the first video on page begins all by itself.

There is plenty of community here. Communities have rules. You chose to ignore them, even after I reminded everyone. If you choose to take your toys and go home, nothing I can do to stop you.
I can say this though, you could just put your 3-day ban behind you, much like any other speeding ticket. I certainly would prefer that, as I hate to lose a member of the community. If you decide to leave though, you must understand that I harbor no ill will toward you. That said, you should get out of the Michigan Militia before they suck you even further into their conspiracy theories. :D

You "hope you aren't breaking any rules", when you know damn well you were. Otherwise, you would have never said the words "I hope I'm not breaking any rules".
I'd warned you in a previous thread. You willfully ignored it. Know how I know? Because that post didn't type itself. Are you going through a rough time? Could be. Lots of folks in Michigan are. 75% of my family are there, and they're all having it rough. I'm sorry to hear it if you are.
But that doesn't change something: This is NOT a site for politics. It's a site for gaming. If you want to talk politics, there are plenty of places for that... You could ask Ghost of War, Spiffness, Freakish, or even me where we talk politics. But we don't do it here. If I do, I expect someone to bitch-slap me.
DeadMeatGF
07-17-2008, 04:11 PM
I've got to go with Kingster:
The rules are - if you post politics, you'll get warned, then banned.
You can't say "I know I'm posting politics, but don't ban me, just delete the thread."
It can't work like that.
"I know I'm beating this guy half to death with a baseball bat, but as he'll heal, you can let me off, right?"
You broke the rules, you got the same punishment anyone else got, what's the problem? No-one's flaming you about it, no-one's going to stop reading your threads, no-one wants you to leave. Just chill back and refocus.

hmmm - right now the code for spoiler tags is simply an html replacement like most vb code - if you come across an open source script on your internet travels, feel free to share, and we can see if we can integrate it.
In unrelated news, I re-did the posticons and added some new ones for your thread-making pleasure.
Also the buttons and general presentation of the black skin has been tweaked a little, especially to fix up the WYSIWYG editor not displaying the buttons/icons very well.
Oh yeah, also created a couple more emoticons, for those that hadn't noticed.
