Is now kind of running. We're slowly getting it together...
Please be patient!
There are some significant changes, and a fair amount of things could well be broken.
A good example of this are links to threads that you all have embedded into posts. Most of these will be jacked. I will try to fix the ones that are links to threads, but links to downloads most likely will not be. :sour:
Update: Links to threads in posts and signatures are fixed.
Another thing that I broke (and well!) was all of your avatars. You'll need to re-up those.
I'll be sure to let you know more as we progress.

Not bad, not bad.
The gray color is not my favorite. and the UP header is not so cool, but I'm happy to see a new site after so long! Good work.

The GUI doesn't matter as much to me as ease of navigation. Two parts of your site should be easy to find and use, that's maps and forums.
Where is the map download area? I'm unable to find that.

What I liked were the UT, 2K4 CTF, DM etc links on the left for maps. Simple and easy to use. UP was my favorite site by far until this change. Is UP going to make the map download area available again?

Just in case you haven't bothered reading around, yes the downloads are coming back. Kingster is neck-deep in work and he is trying ever so hard to get it done. He can't possibly make the site appeal to everyone's bests interests, but he sure is trying. The maps section is broken for now, yes, but it is on his to-do list along with many other things. Just be patient.

Thanks. I've been reading around and knew about the broken links but wasn't sure if the maps area was broken also and would be back.

It'll be back, and yes, I plan to have links straight into the respective downloads areas, as well as the ability to host more than just maps, things like texture packs, skins, map packs (something I've alsways wanted to do!), etc.
Please, be patient. I'm trying as hard as I can, and alas, real life intervenes occasionally.

yes, i agree. this was the only site i got my maps from because it was so easy to use, all the maps were on the left. simple. the new site looks really good but the links to maps are missing. sounds like you're putting the links back in and that will take care of the only complaint i have. also, if you're adding skins and mutators then this site will be better than ever! can't wait!!

Thanks Kingster, UP was the first site I became a member of in years because I was impressed with it. (That says something about UP because I don't like having to join or become a member of web sites)
The second site I don't need to mention because it would probably be advertising but it's for UT admins.

Yup... http://www.unrealplayground.com/forums/upskin3/images/buttons/mymaps.gif
Oh yeah, for anyone stuck on the old black skin - there's been a lot of work done on the new skin, it's still being worked on as the giant 'BETA' stickers allude to, so please check back on progress, as what you initially saw was not the finished product.
Therefore, constructive criticism is welcome at this point (Scourgem's post is a great example.)
I'll get around to fixing some stuff on the old skin too, but the new default style is what I'll be spending the majority of my time doing.
The red buttons are still placeholders, I've built a template in photoshop to make the process of replacing/chaning the fonts/colours etc. a litte quicker - eventually there'll be a couple of options for colour/style on the new skin.

Actually I tend to agree. I hate to be a thorn in the side of JohnnySix, but the old theme made this one of the few sites I could trawl when I was bored & tired. Even with the more muted grey this site is blinding in my dark studio on my Samsung 275t (and I have it at 30% brightness!).
I was happily using the old skin for a bit there too... :p
I think if the white container background were black or near black it would help a great deal though. I can live with grey for the main posting/reading areas but the downside there I've found is that it's hard to get a good contrast for people who don't have insanely high contrast monitors (ie, ancient hand-me-down crt's that many kids have).

I just heard on the radio that the Chinese word for opportunity is also the word for change, and also the word for great danger - seems appropriate here. :spank:
The black skin was put back to appease the loudest complaints, and will have some minor tweaks to make it compatable with the new version of vb- but it's been enough of an investment (30+ hours) creating everything from scratch with the new skin for me, to then start over again to calm the loud minority.
I look forward to constructive ideas from people - I have limited holiday left , and I usually work 13-15 hour days, so next week will not have so much time to invest.
And please step back a moment from your keyboard, take a deep breath, and think of all the really important things, like family, friends, health, and try then measure how much the colour of a forum means within that scale?
I've tried not to be offended by people dumping on the new stuff from a great height without even taking a second look, as most people have no clue about how much time it takes to create it, but plenty know better.
So please, if you have something useful to say, go ahead, but if you're going to descend to the emotional maturity of a 4-year-old, stay away from the reply button...

NP, as soon as I found the 2002 skin, which was about 8 minutes after loading UP the new site, I was happy.
I'm using a nice black theme, which is what I'm used to, and hey lookit-this; a spangly new theme is also being worked on & beta'ed at the same time - so everyone's a winner, right?
I've tried not to be offended by people dumping on the new stuff from a great height without even taking a second look, as most people have no clue about how much time it takes to create it, but plenty know better.I think I mentioned this in another thread but - and I mean this 100% literally - what is there not to like?
None of the forums' features afaik have been cruelly taken away, and nothing's been changed to the extent I can't use it any more, and if a noob like me can figure it all out in less time than it takes to write this post, then anyone can, simple as that.
Ok, maps are being worked on, but really, have any of us really found a huge stock of brand new maps that were lying around & we were just itching to UPload right now? That can't wait a couple of days? I doubt it.
Oh, I just found another useful feature.
If I've already written out a post, and I go back to a line and add a smiley to the end of it, the smiley no longer defaults to the very bottom of the text-block.
Now come on your mardy-mardy people, that single thing alone's gotta be worth the price of change! :D
As to what could be added, hmms;
I can't really think of anything tbh - I come here for the other posters, and as long as we can all undrstand each other to the bear minimum I'm happy.
If it's possible to change the image limit so that it counts actual images and smileys as separate things, that would be great (I tend to use the [img] tags to display a lot of pics) and then you find yourself having to trim out the single winky-face you added to denote a joke, or culling out smilys from other people's quotes because my linked images have used UP my 10-pic image limit, but other than that, I'd just say sit back & enjoy the remainder of your hols matie, have a couple of 's and relax.

Cools, thank you. :)
It's far from being a major thing though, tbh I've never heard of any other forum that counts them as separate, so it might well not be possible/no need to bust any asses on my account/etc/etc..
Demaun
12-05-2007, 04:13 PM
could just have a smilie defined as a pic thats a certain size or less, then when determining whether or not a particular picture is a smilie, just check its size against that

Between 4AM and 5AM Central, the server does all of it's backups, log rotates, etc. You posted that at 4:14AM Central, so the server was just busy. When I set a time to do those things, I tried to pick a time that was after 2AM Pacific time, as that was when most west-coasters went to bed, and the game server redirects could then be affected.
I can't give you any better explanation.
