View Full Version : Which Weapon Hand Do You Prefer?

I prefer hidden -- though I must admit at first it was a bit of a trick getting use to not seeing my weapon. But certain weapons consume way too much of the screen (e.g., the Redeemer and Rocket Launcher) to tolerate and our field of view is so limited to begin with. Now, when I see screen shots where I can see the player's weapon blocking up to a fourth of the screen it seems so novel.

I tried hidden and couldn't get used to it quickly enough. That; and my weapon display is small so I need the weapon visual to know what I have out. So many times with it hidden did I blow myself up with rockets when I thought I had out the shock.:hammer:

I don't even have the weapon icon display thing on my HUD, so when I tried hidden, I kept forgeting what weapon I was using. I just use center now, it doesn't really block my view unless I grab the deemer, which is rare.
Dan
I like the weapon hidden and the HUD small and semi transparent, like in this pic.

I recently changed to hidden and it takes a lot of getting used to but I think the benefits are worth it.

I need to see my weapon, already have too many suicides and need to know what I'm packing. Besides it's cool.

A new comer may get some insight to some of the considerations that may go on when developing their own approach to the game. When I first started I found all the options overwhelming and I had a hard time learning what they all meant and the various strategies behind them -- I find the UT documentation to be beyond pathetic. Finally, I like to know what the elites are doing because I'm curious.
What's interesting is that there really is no pattern except there are no southpaws at the playground. Statistically speaking that's not right (hehe).

I'm no 1337, but I use hidden. Weapon takes up too much space, Another question is what fov do you use in consideration of your mouse sensitivity?

Hidden....I used to have it on the right, but, as Fl[e]ck says...too much space taken. Actually, he got me to hide it:rockon:

It's definitely hard to get used to having the weapon hand hidden which begs the question is it worth it? I can't tell you how many times I killed myself because I failed to detect that my weapon switched from shock to rockets. Ouch! It took time for me but now I appreciate the "uncluttered" view.
However, if an elite player like Freakish says no, it's not worth it to him, then, you really do have to say it can't be essential to being a better player. That's the bottom line for me: hiding the weapon hand is helpful for improving game vision but it should not be a high priority item to the entry-level player.
Practicing one's aim with the different weapons and learning to move across the map are the keys to the game IMHO, at any skill level, beginner, verteran or elite. Everything else gives a very slight advantage/disadvantage. I didn't know that when I started this thread. Now it's clearer to me that elite players are not playing the game differently using trick set-ups, they're just masters at playing the game, period.

There is now. I've just voted.
Being left-handed in real life, I always have it set on Left in the game. :type:
(The redeemer still comes up on the right, you know.)

welcom lefty. My mum always tell me that lefty people are smart, and if they can use both hands they are smarterr.
And if you can right english on one hand, and another language on the other, writing at the same time, you are a freak! (genius)

I'm a lefty too...mouse on the left with buttons swapped and the numeric keypad to move and strafe. But in the game I use the right-hand weapons because the left-hand models aren't cached between maps, so there's an annoying delay when switching to a new weapon for the first time.
I'm also left-eyed, and it's nice not to have the redeemer blocking my view on that side. ;)
Cheers,
Salyavin
welcome, lefty 2! Have a nice day!:)

...I find my aim's a bit quicker when the weapon's centered. Go figure? I also tried hidden, but like so many others, I blew myself up too often. As my dog-trainer keeps telling me, "unrewarded behaviour extinguishes itself." Heh.

I just use right because that was the default and i got so used to it when i tried changing weapon hands i couldn't get used to it.I'm using a mutator which allows you to carry two weapons of the same kind so it don't really make a difference.:type:

Tried them all. I settled for right because I'm right handed and shhot with my right hand. Although I use my bow as a lefty. But there's no bow in UT so no problem there. I just like seeing the guns anyways.
