Hollywood, CA, February 1, 2006 – Award-winning animation director Genndy Tartakovsky, who created the hit series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory, will direct Power of the Dark Crystal, the much anticipated sequel to The Jim Henson Company’s 1982 classic fantasy film. The announcement was made today by Lisa Henson, co-CEO of The Jim Henson Company and a producer on the film.

Additionally, Tartakovsky’s newest venture, Orphanage Animation Studios, has been brought on board as a producing partner to head up the CG animation elements that will be incorporated with the film’s live-action animatronic characters. Legendary fantasy artist Brian Froud, designer of the original film, will return to design the new characters. Odyssey Entertainment is representing worldwide sales and distribution on the film.

Power of the Dark Crystal is a production of The Jim Henson Company in association with Orphanage Animation Studios. With a screenplay by Annette Duffy and David Odell, the film will be produced by Lisa Henson and Orphanage Animation Studios Chairman Scott Stewart. Executive Producers will be Brian Henson with Ralph Kamp and Louise Goodsill of Odyssey Entertainment.

Ehhh...
I don't know if this is a good thing. Sequals are so easy to botch, and The Dark Crystal just barely worked as it is. It does remind me that their movie from last year, Mirrormask, came and went without so much as a trailer in my area and should be on DVD by now.

I liked the original. I got a nice coffee table book on the concept art when it came out. A lot of detailed work went into the designs for the characters, sets, props, etc. I believe this director will stay true to the original.

sequels or prequels (spl?) or for that matter remakes.

it is sort of a turn off that they are using CG but then i reminded myself of LotR and uhhm . . . the final(ly) installment of star wars, lol. but as for the story itself, where could they possibly go? introduce killer mutant tomato's perhaps? :D

i hope not

I read the first half of the first sentence, saw Genndy tartakovsky, and immediately thought, "dexter's lab!" I have no idea what Dark Crystal is, but if he was also behind Smurai Jack, then I have to see it.

Jim Henson was behind the muppets. this should be intresting...

I think those, like myself, will ultimately be dissappointed in a sequal seeing as how it's impossible to capture the emotions one felt as a child watching it for the first time, compared to an adult watching a newer sequal. However, if it can bring me even halfway back to where I felt back then, then I'll be happy. I'm not holding my breath, but I'm quietly hopefull.

Incidently, the person who was the inspiration for the facial features of the Gelflings is a good friend of mine. He works as a lawyer up in Maine. :)

As for MirrorMask: wow. The art, vision, and perspective in that film inspired me greatly. I've already bought the DVD. The combination of Niel Gaimen, Jim Henson studios, and the artist involved (forgot his name) was magical. Sure the story wasn't very innovative, but it was good enough. I reccomend it.

You got that right AV, it'll be hard to top the original.
I just piacked up a re-release double DVD of The Dark Crystal / Labryinth. :)
Loved those movies in my childhood and still do.

LOL, that's awesome. Does everyone walk up to him all the time saying "AAhhhhhh Gelfling" in the Skexis voice....:)
That would get annoying. Either way, they did a fantastic job on the movie. After watching it recently i realised how much Zelda - Ocarina of time ripped it off.
