So SAD (http://www.sequelogue.com/?tab=remakes) :blah:

I'm noticing that the largest percentage of them are Disney movies. I am in total shock. Oh, yes; totally flabbergasted that Disney would attempt to remake or sequel so many of their movies from 20+ years ago. [/sarcasm]

At least I won't be tempted to see any of these remakes / sequels. Nearly the whole list is comprised of movies that either don't need remakes or don't deserve them. The only notable exception I'm making is Sweeney Todd, but it's more of an issue of not being known, so being remade will garner interest in the story.

Some of those are questionable as "remakes":

A lot of the films mentioned were adapted from books, musicals, serials or others.

There is the Casino Royale exemption, in which the original was a spoof on a the Bond movie genre... which was adapted from a novel. The novel is now be given "real" bond treatment.

There are sequels on that list as well...

Here is the list of "abominable" remakes. Those movies that are classic that should not be redone:

Easy Rider
Footloose
The Night of the Iguana
The Warriors

As well as I'm kind of torn on the Man who Fell to Earth. The movie is also based on a novel, but I believe it's sacrimonious for anyone to try redo the '77 Cocaine-era Bowie version.

[/sarcasm]Yeah, Disney used to be a pioneer in the industry. It's sad.

Man, that list is aweful. Those movies DONT need to be redone!

The entertainment industry, be it music, movies, games whatever are all TRYING to go down in a pillar of flame.

The media companies have totally ****ed up.

Game companies: Sequels = money! Quality is not as important as graphics. Pump em out, pay the bills.

Music: Its not the quality of the music thats the problem, its the fact that users arent paying for each song, every time they hear it, anytime, anyway.

Movies: Low attendance in the theatures? rentals crawling along? DVDs not being sold? Its not the high prices, the low quality, or the horrible DRM software. Its the dang pirates! What we need to do is release MORE movies, faster than the pirates can steal them, and quickly and cheaply remake every movie that used to be a classic. Also, give Uwe boll 100 more bajillion dollars to make movies.

Seeing this makes me think about the dynamics in play here:

The portion of the movie budget that's dedicated to writing is not huge. (And even re-writing a script takes a writer and costs money)
The profits made on these movies aren't really that different from the average take on original stories. (It's not like they are a guaranteed winner)

So, why are the studios so in love with remakes? :dunno: As a business decision, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Unless you consider that it may not be the cost of good original story as it is the availability of it.
That's why I'm working my third screenplay atm. ;)

Amen. Now lets go tie Uwe Boll to a bed, and threaten to tickle him to death if he doesn't stop making movies THIS INSTANT.

Did anyone really even enjoy the first blob? :loopy:

If anything, just re-release the damn movies. Im sure people would be happier if they just went and saw the same old ones over and over rather than watching craptastic remakes. Craptastic.. hmm.. i like that word.

Classic books indeed. Classic movies? I'd have to disagree with you there.

Never saw the Abominable Snowman. Might be interesting if the production values are quality. Think I'll see the original first anyway before seeing a remake that possibly just ruins the whole idea.

i meant the books, i didn't see the movies. as a general rule, i don't see movies based on books.

A very strange list. I do not put any faith in most of the movies mentioned there.

I'm actually looking forward to a few of these. I'd like to see a well-done "Creature From The Black Lagoon" remake, and I'll likely go see "Day of the Dead" if it's done by the same folks who recently redid "Dawn". Also, "Friday the 13th" would be on my to-see list.

I guess it's just the bad horror movie fan in me. :)

If they "Restart" Predator. Heads will roll.

Without getting my own ass in trouble, here's a smallish bit of news. Twentieth Century Fox are in talks with Johnny McTiernan to do a new Predator film - not a sequel, not a remake, not a prequel; more of a restart.

There's talk - based on a treatment that's floating around the traps - that it might fix on Dutch's (the guy from the first film, Arnie played) grown-up commando kid.

And they'd better leave Evil dead alone. Those movies are so funny....ARMY OF DARKNESS!

I think it's more to the tune that you have a strong concept or core character, yet you wish to eject the continuity baggage that that films and franchises bring.

They idea was first introduced into the comic book world, by Marvel. They did the "Heroes Reborn" line that absolutely sucked. It wasn't so much that the idea of "rebooting" your characters was a bad one. They just picked some poor collaborators and Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, et. al.

Marvel, next did that in the Marvel Knights line... which totally rocked. When they booted their former EIC, and hired Quesada, he took that idea to the next level with the Ultimate Marvel line, which saw X-Men and Spider-Man rebooted.

This past summer we saw "Batman Begins" which was based off of Frank Miller's Batman: Year One mini-series, but yet at the same time also "restarted" that franchise.

Batman is a cool character. I liked the Tim Burton Batman movies. I thought a lot less of the Joel Schumacher movies, and thought the franchise was done ill with introduction of Robin, Bat-Girl, and the whole panthenon of Bat characters to the screen.

And while the Tim-Burton/Dark-Kinght-over-the-top-Deco setting was good at the time, it aged poorly. The franchise was definitely better for ejecting that baggage and reimaging the character for 2005.

Is that such a bad thing?

I don't think so either, freshie. I did notice that while fantastic four and the hulk were just horrible, the spider-mans were okay, and the newest Batman movie was pretty good, actually. hoping for a lucky break, I might be tempted to see Iron Man. and day of the dead should turn out at least okay, it's not an easy thing to butcher a zombie movie. just by virtue of having zombies the movie gets a Rock ()factor X8. shotguns add a Rock() factor X2.

but keep your greasy hands off black lagoon, 1984, curious george (oops, too late), footloose, and the warriors. hollywood sickens me.

Nice

"The Blob"

The Blob (1958)
The Blob (1988)
The Blob (2006)

I like / have boath the 1958 and 1988 versions. All I got to say since they are going to remake it again. They better not mess it up.

I for one really liked "Nineteen Eighty-Four" the movie, with the Eurythmics soundtrack. When they released the soundtrack the director axed the Eurythmics. I liked its styling, and they way it was filmed.
I really liked john hurt in that movie. ive read the book many times.
Another good orwell book i liked his Burmese Days.

The Original The Abominable Snowman is great too, with Peter Cushing. I have that on DVD as well.

I also liked Flash Gordon with all its cheesyness....

I see Seconds is on there... One of my favorite movies. has rock hudson in it... great story, and filmed really good as well.

I'm down for a remake of Journey to the Center of the Earth. New special effects will do wonders for that story.

The only cast to see play Sweeney Todd. There is no possible way this can be redone. Careful there is another version with a different Broadway cast and it is sub par to this one. If you are a horror genre fan, then this is a must have. Even if it is a musical play. The humor is excellent and the music is very inventive.

Sondheim is the only musical playwright I can stomach. The man is a genius.

There's no year listed, so I'm hoping A) It hasn't started yet, and/or B) it never will be started

Oh god... Ninja Turtles is on that list, dated next year >_<
Jeez... can't believe Evil Dead is on there... WTF is Campbell thinking
Friday the 13th. As if that franchise hasn't been done to death already
Munsters, Pet Sematary, Porky's, Six Million Dollar Man, Tron

And the real kick in the balls: The Three Stooges
