Lots of new awesome screenshots from the demo:
http://www.xp-erience.org/images/ut/ut.htm
And I guess people can see that the "demo" installation was WAYYYYYYY higher than previous anticipated...
804 megs for the install. That means at least a 500 meg download file.
Sounds bad doesn't it? No, it's awesome! Because it's so big, it means that the texture files are huge and therefore, extremely detailed... not that you couldn't already tell from the movies and screenshots. (though keep in mind, these are new screenshots. All of the old videos and old screenshots are obsolete because they do not use a lot of the engine features (karma physics, new graphics, new sound effect, new music, tweaks, updated models etc...).

those are shots off the -not real demo- as in the leaked version.. as one can see in the screen shots where it says 2001 and so on.. so not really a true idea as to what the real demo will look like

I'm not sure if it's a leaked build of UT2003, and it DOES says demo on the top of it.
Therefore, it is a build of the demo
:p
It could have been made in 2001, but I sincerely doubt it due to the fact that the "leaked build" came out in March. They were still in the process of having a playable build that ran back in 2001. What is most probable, is that they started the project in 2001 and therefore, they wrote the date it was started at.
Do not doubt the Freeseus. :tsk: :tsk: :tsk:

if you say "the demo" it would seem to say your talking about the "real" ut2003 demo.. THOSE ARE FROM the leaked demo, or as the makers of UT call it the stolen one. The makers of the game have asked that shots not be posted from it and so and the forum host here have said that is what they will do.
The fact that it UT but not shots from the offical demo for UT2003 makes it sort of point less..
I have seen the stolen demo first hand and I know for 100% that every thing in those screen shots is from that build... Main ut guy said it was from back in Feb I think who knows what might of changed...

The currently circulating build, from which those screenshots were taken, is outdated. There's no karma engine, water doesn't work right, etc.
I have it, I've played it, it's not recent compared to the E3 game -- for example, you can get the targeting gun on LG2, but the laser strike doesn't work, yet there's footage of working laser strikes. Thus, this build predates a working laser strike. I think the one that's circulating around was from a computer gaming magazine or something, and got outdated enough that their security lapsed and someone snatched it and put it out as warez.
That said, it's still the "Actual" demo, it's just a super-crappy early version of the game. Lava Giant ][ is in there, and that's what it's gonna look like. The HUD might change, weapon balance &etc will shift, terrain features might be different as the map gets tinkered with, but looking at that is looking at some form of LG2.
It plays pretty well, too. I like that they incorporated the ridge into the play flow, and I like that they made the lower paths more naturalistic and part of the terrain, not artificial walkways. The slight grade at the side makes for less of that frustrating "whups, fell to my death while running backwards" that always irked me about Lava Giant.

I haven't played the leaked demo, but my imaginary friend has ( :) ). It's definetly an old build and not representative of the real thing. For one things, there are only 2 body skins, and only one head skin, so there is only one fully skinned character. If that wasn't bad enough, the skeletal meshes for the characters were compiled wrong, and so they are stuck at the second LOD level, so they look distorted, low poly, and just bad. Of course, my imaginary friend, being the tinkerer he is, fixed that problem with a bit of code tweeking and recompiling. Also the lighting on the skeletal meshes isn't right in the engine, so my imaginary friend had to turn up the ambient lighting values for all pawns so they aren't so dark. Also, Karma was only partially integrated, so no rag doll physics. And the Ion Cannon wasn't complete either ( though my imaginary friend took care of that too ). The maps are glitchy as hell. Apperently the frame rates are quite a bit lower then the most recent builds ( though it's much faster then some people thought it'd be ). And what's that? No bombing run? That's right, the most intriguing gameplay addition isn't even in the leaked demo, so if you haven't tried the leaked demo, don't worry, you're better off waiting for the real thing.

I might add that it's not really logical to call it a demo, more like an incomplete build. It comes with UnrealEd, and is completely open to code modification, which won't be the case with the real demo.

I'm guessing when the game is done Framerates will be quite lower than in the illegal demo, since imagine 3 or more players in view all dying using the karma system :D Then factor in particle effects and dynamic lighting and you are looking at an average of 20 fps at medium detail, for a system under 1ghz with anything less than a GeforceMx440. Of course I could be way off base for sure as I have no idea what I'm talking about ;)

Not necessarily. Generally the first step is to make it work, and after that's done, make it fast. So it's very likely that the Unreal engine build used on that demo had some ruff unoptimized code. And I don't expect Karma to slow down the engine much at all. The characters are already use skeletal animation, all Karma is doing is controlling the movement of the skeletons joints with contraints and some forces, and I've checked out a ruff test of the Karma engine on their website. With alot of contrained joints and forces throwing everything around, it didn't slow down one bit, and all Karma has to worry about in the Unreal engine is maybe 12 or so joints per dying person, which in the uber optimized Math engine, it shouldn't be a problem at all. I think the main issue is getting it to look good. Of course there is no way to tell how well they optimized everything until we get the damn demo, so both of us are just making wild guesses really. :)

Hey there Mr. Engineer. =)
I'm glad I wasn't hallucinating that the pawns are lit wrong.
