What do I do about my VERY slow ping?

i have Satellite internet access which speed varies between 150k-700k, not slow by any means (much better then dial up). My ping when I play Unreal Tournament online games is ALWAYS 4,000 to 8,000 and I really cannot play most of the time. I am either getting disconnected from the server or I see everything a couple of seconds slow! What can I do about this. I set everything on the game to the lowest settings like video, sound, etc. What do you recommend? THanks!

Well, I dunno. My highest ping is 5000 and sometimes I just like to join those to tease people :evil: . I'm mplayin ut again since a long time and then it even ownz more!

Unfortunately, satellite internet is not suited for online play, as you always have unplayable pings (500+ ms). There really isn't much you can do. For gaming purposes, a 56k modem is actually superior.

Why isn't it suitable anyways?Basically, because of the distances involved. Satellite connections can achieve decent download rates (eg 700k as you state), but they never have quick response times. And quick response is what you need to play games online.

I have ADSL, and I have about 160-200 ping, usually. So it's actually working great.

Maybe you connect to servers that are closer to you and have low pings.
