Well i know about the whole brush thing but is there an easier way (without converting your meshes to brushes)to make the textures not so streched out ect. on custom made meshes??

Eira I have a quick rundown on maya texturing in the content creation forums. Lemme see if I can find it....

It doesn't go too much into the actual stretching and whatnot of textures, but it will get you started getting UED textures into Maya so you can have a better idea of how it will look in game. Then I'm sure if you play with Edit Polygons>Texture and then experimenting there. You can mess with the values in the channel box after you have applied a texture and this will move the texture around. If you don't know about the channel box it can be opened by finding the three wierd looking buttons in the top right of maya, and it's the one on the right.
Now look in the new pane that pops up for somethiig called textureblahblah or whatever projection. Highlight that and you will see some fields show up below that you can adjust. If I figured it out from playing with it, odds are just about everyone can. Have fun
