Ok..It's been quite around here. So I've decided to start, yet another, pointless thread.
What does your name mean or stand for, (ex:Inkswitch, what the hecks that?) where did you get it and why'd you choose it?
Where I got it:
My name, Duo Maxwell, is from a Japanese cartoon. In this cartoon he is also refered to as "Shinigami", which I beleive in Japanese means "god of death"
How I got it:
My father took a bussiness trip about 5 years ago and brought me back a video tape from Japan. It was an episode from a japanese cartoon called gundam. In it there were 5 pilots of these "Gundams" that were all from different countries. Duo Maxwell, is the American Pilot.

I came across my name very easily!

Taz:

I get the Taz part from my husband.. he reminds me of the Taz cartoon. Because I like the cartoon so much (I got into it when I babysat my youngest sister) I decided to nick name my hubby that which i later took from him :)

Girl:

Very Very easy... I'm a girl!!

with that said...

TazGirl is a woman who loves her husband so dearly that she choose her nick because of him!

I am one of those mothers that like to keep a close eye on their kids. When my son got hooked on the game I decided to check out what he was doing. I needed a name that I didn't think he would suspect. He just happened to have a copy of Redneck Rampage on the desk the first time I signed on. The rest is history. I got hooked and ended up having to buy him a computer so we could both play.

Freshie is short for freshmaker. The freshmaker is for mentos. Those early mentos commercials were hilarious.

cal ripone jr. my in-game moniker came from modifying Cal Ripken Jr's that I use when I have to make an account, and I don't want to use my real-name. I thought it was a good name for UT.

Your funny Freshie..

I took my name when many people tried to help me get better in UT and I never did. I couldn't hit anything. If they couldn't be the best, it wasn't worth playing for them. I told them if this is the best I will be so be it and I wasn't going to quit. It turned out my mouse sensetivity was on 18...I turned it down to 7 and can actually hit what I aim at...hehe.

As for me I actually had several names that I retired

At first I was

Zahriki

It was from an anime called Battle Angel "Alita" before it got ported over to america.

I saw it as a fan-subtitled movie
great movie by the way

Then after gettin a bunch of lag from my 23.3 connection
I was

LagMaster Flash

That name is sorta a mix from alot of lag and I was listening to
Jammaster Flash and the Furious 5 at the time.

And as for Turkish
I had this name before the movie came out.
You know the one "Snatch"
people think I got that name from the movie but I actually thought about it while watching an episode of Seinfeld and the Soup Nazis
He was German but I thought it would have been funny if he was

Turkish :P

Bet your wondering how I got my name - hehe.

Well one day at the office we were suppose to have a meeting in one of the meeting rooms. But when we got to the room and entered it, the room was all messed up like someone had a party in there or something. The room was messy and there were stains everywhere. I don't know if they were buggers, coffee stains or what, or something more sinister(LOL!!). No one wanted to sit down. Anyway, before I sat down the only thing I could say was "Man, I hope to god thats milk". It was funny at the time, so I thought it would be an interesting alias for UT.

I do have other aliases but thats the one I use on this server, and others as well.

Never did find out exactly who was in that room. Though moments before we got there, a robed figure could be seen turning the corner, and there were strangelike cow noises in the vicinity, followed by a brief chainsaw outburst and the words. "Its madness, its madness I tell ya". All I know is when I got home I took a long hot shower. Then in the days to come there was a letter circulating around the office - something about employee's responsibility to keep the place tidy. It was very difficult to read because apprently somebody try to rip it up with a chainsaw......

Just bumping this thread for the the newcomers out there wondering how the "Regs" got most of their gaming names.

Idle Idol
05-30-2002, 03:04 AM
well i've played here under several pseudonyms, this one being the only one i've really talked to people/posted. It's also very unoriginal. Just a simple wordplay, nothing you haven't heard before. One day day a friend of mine who doesn't play computer games was watching me play, we were killing some time waiting for a phone call from a third friend about what was going on that evening. He said "well, your pretty good" and i said "yup, i just sit here and flick my wrists and I can be good at something." we bantered and he ended up calling me Idle, or refering to being good at computer games is like a car being good at Idling. something like that, I made the word play on Idle and presto change...hit the tild key and changed my name right then.

Other names i've played under here:
Taran - character from the lloyd alexander books the Prydain Chronicles, which were butchered and made into a disney movie that practically no one knows about! It's like the forgotten disney animated classic (The black cauldron) i didn't even know about the movie until like 6 years after i read the books

Gizmorocks/GizmoRockStar - www.x-entertainment.com = badass site. Saw this picture on there one day and just decided i would use that picture as the basis for an online persona (gizmo being the mogwoi from the Gremlins movies =)
http://members.aol.com/rowanq/gizmorocks.gif

Rowan
japanese animation, "Armored Samurai Troopers" is the direct translated name, Ronin Warriors was the released american name. Character looks badass and is badass, quote from the series: "He is the most clever and therefore the most dangerous of the ronin warriors"

There was also a name i used that was quote from southpark, from cartman. "whose-a-jiggah-what" i was playing here one day under one of the aforementioned names, one of the regs (long time ago, forget who) asked who the hell I was so i changed my name to that in jest. ended up sticking for quite some time =)

I've grown quite fond of Idle Idol however, i think i'll stick with it for a while =)

edit: forgot to mention
The character in my avatar is one from Trigun. Though i've never seen the entire anime through, i've seen a bit of it. Have a couple friends that loved it. I wanted a neat looking picture of an anime character with a gun, so i went to images.google.com and did a search i think for "anime big gun" this poped up, i recognized it from trigun and i really liked the insane glint in his eyes. worked well for my "idle's hands" reference i seem to like so much =)

OH MY LORD I watched that cartoon in "The black cauldron" in the theater and then bought the game for my apple 2 :P

Got stuck on it for a long time then eventually beat it.

If you want an awesome picture of a gun tote-ing anime character go no further then Cowboy Bebop.

I got one of the pictures as my wall paper, but I actually never watched the series even though my brother says its quite bad-ass.

I took my name from a movie that is a bit of a cult classic: "Logan's Run".

It's an interesting perspective of the future. It's a sci-fi movie about a civilization living inside a sealed city. This "city in a bubble" is a controlled society, a product of post-nuclear war. The inhabitants of the city are free to experience all the pleasures of life, the only catch is that life must end at 30 unless reborn in the "fiery ritual of carousel". Logan (Michael York) is a Sandman, a man who hunts down "runners" who do not wish to participate in carousel. The computer which controls the city decides to advance Logan's age to 30, and turn him into a runner. As a runner, he must find "sanctuary", a supposed hiding place for runners.

Logan's partner while he is a Sandman is another hunter named "Francis 7" (Logan's name is "Logan 5"). He is called "F7" for short and is a bit...unbalanced.

Anyway there's this great scene where F7 is hunting a runner. The runner starts shooting at him at point blank range and F7's reaction is to cackle madly and toy with the man. I liked the scene and thought the character kicked ass.

First used "An Inflamed Testicle" cause I thought"you've been killed by an inflamed testicle" was mighty funny. I then used Ann Thrax for a little while but tons of other people started using it. I sat down and gave it much thought and then decided, why not just use the two things in this world that I like the best"BOOBS"(sounds better then breast and the other name, well even though it would be fun I am sure I would get grief) So the great BOOBS was born.

While mine's pretty obvious, remarkably people still ask what it means. I just tell them to say it out loud enough times and they'll figure it out. Helps if you do it with a British accent.

But it came from the days of playing the NHL series on Sega Genesis. Always made my own goalie named Fa Kov. In my mind he was a surly old Russian alcoholic in his late 40s, but impenetrable in the net. I liked the name so much I use it for everything now.

uncledumpy
05-30-2002, 01:09 PM
I guess I could explain “uncledumpy”; sorry kind of long story…

About 7 years ago I was getting drunk with a buddy of mine at the Native (wing joint) in Phoenix when I was bust’n his balls about becoming a “daddy”, and like normal, quite cruelly. (Ironic now that I’m a dad…) This buddy Tom is quite the clever one, and told me his son would only know me as “Uncledumpy”. Why? Cause I would take monster dumps at this apartment, not flush, then go home. I know, I was a sick bastard, but damn was it funny when I would get the call “Your such a sick f*ck, my mom just stopped by…” You get the picture… I moved to Las Vegas and the years went by, which I never heard this nic-name… Thought he forgot…

Then I moved back to Phoenix… We were with some friends and we ran into Tom, his wife, and their son, Justin; I was with my very new fiancée and sure enough, the first words out of Justin’s mouth was “Hi Uncledumpy”. After that moment, I was referred to as Uncledumpy by EVERYONE. I couldn’t shake the nickname, so I adopted it.

Oh, when I was using MIF. It was actually a mis-spell for MILF. I loved American Pie. I used \--SirKillZALot--/, but it just seemed too dorky. Plus I sucked.

I started playing UT only by accident. At the office with a co-worker, on our LAN. My nick in real life has always been Spike (for some reason it sticks, even with co-workers) and So is my real last name. So when me and Grendel's Mutha got tired of kicking our co-workers butts, we decided to try online. By the time I felt creative enough to change my nick, I had met too many ppl on Space Monster server to change it. I didn't want to lose all the UT contacts.

The first day of high school this guy on the football team was being an a$$ to me and me being the smart a$$ that I am made him want to kick my a$$,, SO after school he stoped me in the parking lot and started and fight. Back then the smallest thing when piss off so bad I would just go nuts, so when he hit me the first time I went nuts on him and beat the ***** out of him,,,the guy had to go to the hospital. TraciLords69
05-31-2002, 01:57 AM
Well my name is not all that complicated, but there is a story behind it. I was in the "What should my name be" phase over a year ago. My boyfriend was visiting and I was watching him play UT, and then it dawned on me that I should have a porn star name...duh right? So I asked him what the name of a porn star was, since I didn't know any (yet), and the first name he said was Traci Lords (boyfriend drools heavily at this point), so there ya go.

While I was unfamiliar with any porn at the time, I assure you I am more than familiar with her work now. Ohhh yaaa :spank:

I used to go by BullFrog when I played RTCW. This moniker came from the name of my favorite alcoholic drink at the (vodka and lemonade). RTCW became to easy so Squirrel suggested UT, which I hadn't played in a long time. After getting my ass handed to me for some time on Stealth, I changed to Froginabox when we started our "quasi-clan of sorts....so to speak."

One day, I will dominate again.

Viperman and Richard Zinia are a couple of friends and played many FPS games, I like Racing and Speed. Well Vipe was playing on-line one day when I stopped by and I sat down and got Hooked.

I know I sucked then and still do, But I dont care! Since I wanted an original name (who doesnt), so many Duplicates ...... Well I have a filthy potty mouth, and when you A$$ Holes kept killing me I would say bad words, " Why That Muther.... " you get the rest.

Also, FOrd MOtor COmpany (FOMOCO) labels its parts that way I am a Chevy Freak so, F&#^ Ford, = MOFOCO

Kindness

Kindness wrote in a different thread of his own devising when TraciLords69 directed him here:
I only started playing any form of electronic game last year; I wanted to think of a name that made sense in the various messages that are generated by the game; hence,

You were killed by Kindness.
You killed Kindness.
Kindness left the game.
etc., etc.

There are other names of this type, e.g., The-Bottle, Your-Disease.

I also go by Orren-The-Moron. It was suppose to rhyme, but, doesn't really. and, of course, is itself moronic in that way!

And, Give-Love-Each-Day, from the YES album Magnification, their latest. Seems appropriate for a game of murder, right?

I originally posted this on the other thread, but here it is again....just cut and pasted.

Well, I started playing electronic online games about 4 years ago with Quake 1. My first character's name was Decoy. I came up with it because I figured, hey, that's what I am for the team...a decoy so the other teammates can cap the flag =D. And, actually, after realizing that the name was a little too lame for me for those games, I saw the movie Face Off and thus named my character Castor. And then a few weeks after that, got into Delta Force and named my character Pollax.

So, after getting into Unreal Tournament, I need a new name to go with this new kick-a$$ game. Thus, I came up with Prophet Six. Prophet from Nostradamus (quite an interesting fellow) and Six because, well, Prophet just wasn't enough....it needed a number at the end and Six just fit the best.

And thus Prophet Six was created and now adorns many-a-maps with his blood, guts and gore.:loopy:

The_Stranger
09-03-2002, 07:24 PM
The_Stranger is a name I made up while looking around for a good CTF server. There seemed to be a lot of communities built up around each one, whereas I was not staying anywhere for long, just popping in and playing a game or two, and then going somewhere else.

Since I hadn't played much online, I was really bad, and didn't want to establish a rep as a completely incompent nOOb under my older LAN-based game name (AntMan).

I play on the playground pretty exclusively now, and I'm not quite as helpless, anymore, so I could switch back to AntMan, but I find I have gotten attached to The Stranger.

The AntMan will probably make an occasional appearance, just the same.

[AcK]BillTheCat -> From the comic strip Bloom County (one of the funniest strips of all time) - AcK!! is what Bill said a lot and so I made it a clan tag. I still use this nick in IRC since it seems to make it easier to be a total loon (life's too short to be serious all the time).

A pic of Bill (http://www.premier.net/~cspedale/opus/images/bill2.jpg)

I played as {who}cares for a while when I got tired of all the '1337' players complaining 24/7 (WTF BS LAG WAAAAAAAAA). My wife (Long_Legs) played as {who}knows during that time. At least StealthDP has a minimum of this behaviour though it is rampant on many of the servers out there.

[CMi]CatsEye -> When PacBell made it impossible to continue [AcK] since my wife and I could no longer play together on the same server without 4K pings, we joined Cosmic Monsters, Inc. Some may recognize the reference to Rob/White Zombie. The clan used to be all named after songs or references (Soul-Crusher, El Phantasmo, SuperBeast, etc...) but that requirement has been dropped. Our main server is still called Grindhouse and I will keep the CatsEye nick as well.

As an aside, I would like to express my appreciation to the owners and admins of the StealthDP servers and website/forums for making such a great place to play under whatever nick we are using today. These servers seem to be the last bastion of UT fun out there and I am grateful to be able to play with such a great bunch of skilled players.

SMOOCHES to all!

Actually Maxwell, I like this thread. I have always wondered about how people came to name themselves for UT. My story is a bit outside the norm.

I grew up playing games in a mall arcade (go figure) and there was an Air Hockey table there. At 14 I started playing in weekly tournaments and started getting good. By 18 I had become the National Air Hockey Champion - yes, National and World Championships do exist. Anyhow, I was given the nickname "Young Wolf" because, up until I came along, all the best players in the country were in their 30's. I was part of an newer younger generation of players who were "nipping at the heels of the Old Guard like a pack of wolves" (this was a quote that was in the player association newsletter at the time and where the name originated).

Now days the newer players sometimes joke and call me Old Wolf or Grey Wolf (though I'm only freaking 32 and still ranked 2nd in the world). Anyhow, the original name stuck and I use it a lot for gaming.

I originally began as "Supersaijyin" ...obviously a big DBZ fan.

then with Crouching tiger hidden dragon was released in the US and i was hard pressed to join a clan i faked my own as "[CTHD]Supersaiyjin"

after a few months of play i noticed too many "supersayans" "supersaiyin" etc etc... so i decided to switch to "[CTHD]Ultrasaiyjin" (ultra-kill) + (supersaiyjin)

then a i met a few friends from college who were into DM and i tried to get them to become [CTHD] but none of them were real fans... finally after weeks of petty argument we decided on a name that was really catchy/ noticable and unforgettable [NEGRO].

and to tell you the truth the only reason im keeping the [NEGRO] tag is because of our website....well im really the only one left but oh well, the name works for me :)

"We will call you Cygnus, the God of Balance you shall be") and what would be better for motocross then balance eh? Cyngus X-1 is also the name of a constellation that includes the black hole of CygnusX1. SO, we got God of Balance and a Black Hole hahhaa

Good for you, Maxwell, this is the kind of thread that deserves to stick near the top of the forum section. "Know whatahmean, know whatahmean, nudge nudge, know whatahmean, say no more?" (http://www.graphicszone.net/monty_python/scripts/Series_1/25.htm)

I always find it interesting to see what players' names mean to the players themselves. And, as new players arrive, one way of introducing themselves is to post their names and the histories behind those names here. Great idea, Maxwell, great thread.

How I got my name goes back a ways. I use to play Paintball / CTF/ Survival Games a lot. The third gun I owned was the first generation 64 Automag. If you played back in those days you know what a weapon that was when it first came out. So I have this awsome piant gun and rack up the kills with it.
One weekend a british soldier who was playing refered to the gun as a "widowmaker". I did up a fancy case for it with the widowmaker name and milked it for all it was worth. So name ws originally given to a paint gun I had.
Now a few years later I started player DN3D online and used the name widowmaker because I thought it was going to intimidate my opposition. Used it since then in the Duke Nukem 3D Mod community. Revived it when I came here.

But honestly it just doesn't have the ring to it that it once had. Maybe I will come up with something a little more friendly one of these days.

Hmmm mine's really simple. My old screen nick was Xtreme1 (there's a story behind that, but that's another story), people got lazy and started calling me X1 , I ended up adopting it .. and it just evolved to what it is now .. eX-one

Xtreme1 -> X1 -> eX-one

everyone that sees my name the first time calls me Exxon or something similar

Simpson's needed to end around 98-99. Now it's just stupid.

I consider simpson's and King of the Hill, Beavis and Butthead, and other adult oriented prime-time cartoons to be in a different category than those 80's toy cartoons.

I loved the Transformers, but I think that Thundercats might have been just a tad-bit better.

I started out as BillClinton a while back. I can't remember if the scandal was still going on with our old pal Bill, but I can remember one thing. I was so proud of that man. Sure you can flame, but first, you need to become president then do something that badass while in office. He might be a huge embarassment to our nation, but I found it rather amusing.

After a year or so playing with that name, I began to see more and more people using it. I saw numerous BillClintons and Monica Lewinsky's so I knew it was time for a switch.

I wanted to still be recognizeable to those I knew hence I left Bill somewhere in the name. Whose the fastest kid in the west? No doubt. BillyTheKid.

A&E probably won't want to start a biography on me cause of this but at least my fellow UPer's will always know.

In real life I also go by the nicknames FNC (pronounced funk, short for Friendly Neighborhood Crustacean, long story there) and Sebastian.

Well, isn't that special? :D

As far as vowels go, you are basically right. Vowels are essentially just different overtone combinations (created by altering the throat/mouth/nasal passages) of the root vibration created by oscillating our vocal cords. Consonants are basically what control the flow of vowel sounds. Without a vowel sound present, a consonant can't exist.

You can hear a consonant without vowels, per se, if you substitute gray noise for the vocal cord oscillations. The noise can be created by flowing air over a surface without the surface oscillating in a regular pattern. Thus, over the teeth and lips:

ffffffffff
thththth
shhhhhhhhhhhh
sssssssss

It is possible some languages would consider such utterances as actual words.

Whispering also uses noise instead of regular oscillations, but the noise is still shaped by the vocal passage so that vowels are recognized as a certain range of frequency emphasis.

:D

Depends on the languag-- there are gaelic words and Welsh (I believe) with now "standard" vowels, but then a "W" in Welsh can have that function intranslation as in "clwd"

The word "Hmm" and "Shhh" have been commonly accepted vocabulary.

Heh. My education is in theater directing, so I've done my share of studying phonetics and linguistics. And I'm a musician, so I've always had an interest in the science of sound, fascinating stuff, all of it.

An interesting note: Hebrew is normally written without vowels, except where absolutely necessary to clarify specific meaning that can't be determined from context. So, in effect, Hebrew, though in a different script, looks in effect a lot like what you've written above. The vowels exist, and can be written, but are usually omitted. Basically, the vowels look like punctuation marks, added below the consonants (in blue, in the attached graphic; Hebrew is also written right to left; this is an example of print letters, not handwriting)

then me and some friends participated in math counts, and all did horribly, as we hate math. there was a sign that said: Welcome Mathletes! at the event, and i got a kick out of it. one day playing lan with my brothers in Custom edition, i changed it to Mathlete as a joke. around that time i noticed different forms of Caboose popping up, as RVB grew in popularity. i just decided to keep it, and here i am.

im not sure if i ever had a name before that, come to think of it halo might have been the first online game i ever had.

also, if you catch me on any delta force games i'll be Joe Pimpin'. no reason really, it just sounds kinda goofy :D

I was randomly repeating my initials one day (NMS) and drew a blank for reasons stated above, the ones about how words need vowels. I inserted the ones that made sense... nemis or nemes. tack on another syllable, and I've got myselfe nemesis- archenemy, a sworn opponent. which, in refrence to games, I am. I'm the sworn opponent of the other team :D

I was young at the time, and I thought l337 was awesome. it still is, but now I go by nemesis in other games to save people the pain of figuring out the numbers. in order to keep my friends and reputation in UT, I just stuck with n3m35i5 for that game.

yes, I was randomly pronouncing my initials. I had that much free time. :)

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, My friend and I were formatting my computer and I realized that I still didn't know my password into my hotmail and mss messenger, so I was like, "AAAH! Is there anyway I can still login into MSN with the old stuff?" and he said, "That's just so overly random."

I realized after that moment that I did not need my old email.

Ratt

My name was originally going to be Rattt cause you'd pronounce it "rat tee tee" as in "rat tittie". Then I thought not because people would think I was being stupid. So now it's just ratt. I don't know why I just stuck with it.

uncledumpy

I used --SirKillZALot--/, but it just seemed too dorky. Plus I sucked.

lol- I forgot how funny I am! :)

I've used this name since 1999.

Mini as in Mini-Me
Maul as in Darth maul

Posted that back on 06-10-2002, 01:59 AM. LOL; back in the day when I had a hard time finishing a match with a score above zero; the Ripper was my nemesis. I haven't played as Orren-The-Moron for a while; I would need to get really drunk, to the point that Orren and Moron start to rhyme again.

Still listening to Give Love Each Day by Yes; it's a great song.

Traci, where you been?

Savant - a person of learning; especially : one with detailed knowledge in some specialized field

:coffee: Savant was also the brand name of the 1st mini computer hardware system I worked on way back in 1980.
If you worked on a Savant Computer then we probably knew each other. Yes, they really did have computers in those days. :D

Holy crap! I thought these old threads were deemed too holy to touch! :O

I came UP with my name when I was 11 years old and me and my mates were talking about this awesome new game called counter-strike. :p We talked about starting a clan (Which never happened, I was still on dial up at the time and my PC sucked :p) and I sarted thinking about an online nick I could use.

My first idea was Mean-Immortal, but switched to MeanyMortal when I started playing Warcraft 3 a few years later. I thought it sounded better at the time, now I kinda hate it, I just keep it to avoid confusion.

Anyways, the meaning should be pretty self-explationary. Meany = Me being a mean bastard, Mortal = Everyone's got a weakness, right?
