If so we will be back to the basics again relearning how to use the hardware brushes.

U2 will almost definatly ship with the editor. Judging by the size of the mapping community for Unreal and UT and how much it's supported the game and kept people playing they would be so foolish not to include it.
And you won't have to learn how to use Hardware brushes. By the time U2 ships, we'll all have been using them for 3-4 months in UT2 :)

Actually, those screenies originated from an Infogrames E3 press kit, and are from the UT2003 editor. However, in speaking with some Unreal 2 developers at E3, the editor that will be included with that game is nearly identical.

Its unfortunate that Unreal2 is using different scaling from UT2k3. If I had a choice Unreal2 would be the game to map for but they got no multiplayer  . Even if mp gets added later on you would never be able to import your UT2k3 geometry over so u would have to do twice the work

seems silly that both games would not use the same editor

I'd bet you couldn't tell the difference they'll be so close :p

Even if the editors were identical, the fact that they are using a totally different scale from UT2k3 for their maps means you cannot interchange maps between the two games properly. Unreal2 editor may have more advanced features since its coming out later :dunno: .

We don't need to worry about switching maps though. Aslong as UW takes a U2's scaling, I think it's a good thing. I think they changed the scaling on purpose so you guys would stop recycling the old maps. They want the game to progress.

If UT2 is released with an updated editor, I imagine it will be made available through a patch or update for UT2003, as an updated editor was released during UT's many patches.

hey all,
A friend of mine has managed to secure a leaked demo and I can definitely vouch for the awesomeness of the editor. It seems that even though the maps are tremendously smoother and more detailed, the poly count is still really low. :D Apparently most of the maps will now be a bunch of meshes, both prefab and created. And so far, creating terrains is really easy too, and even easier to manipulate and texture. It's gonna be great boys and girls.....fun and death for everyone

I forgot to mention the amount of decoration detail it has now. Yesterday I created a landscape that had grass covered hills, a packed forest with about 30 trees, and a lake with lots of plantlife and rock detail and the fps never went under 180! (of course pc ability matters some) Decoration like that on the old UT would have made it play like mud. There is a great fogging effect that you can add (fog is now a good thing) that keeps things choppiness down. This editor rocks so far, I'd expect to see some great maps really quickly. And for anyone who is going to be looking for a great server for the new UT, check out [CSHP] Zazo County just as soon as the official demo is released :D The server is up now for the original UT with some great maps and 2 of my custom maps. Happy hunting all:evil:

So I guess all that work took about - let me guess - 5 minutes work of drag and drop :D :spank: :tsk:

Actually, it's not drag and drop because there aren't any prefabs in the beta version I have. So I had to create most of what I used, and it doesn't work the way it used to. Each landscape is really an actor with various alpha levels set to different intensities which determine the texturing levels, and the decorations are set as one of the alpha levels of that actor. It sounds more complicated than it is, but it is definitely not just "drag and drop". I'm only learning the basics, and although some of it looks similar, most of it is a completlely new concept to mapping.

If you mean the editor used for UT and UT2 then the answer is because of the new concept to both the game and the mapping. The old editor was based on a completely different concept. The new one will run with lower fps, clearer, and with more detail. Believe me, it will be worth learning the new editor. And if you already know how to map, you should have no problem with it.
one thing though:confused: I hope the gameplay is smoother on the "real" release of this thing. Runs kinda choppy no matter what is tried:mad:
soon, soon, bloodbaths, soon
:blah: Sleeper:blah:
Well geez, everything looks so good in the editor... But i still think its useless to make modifications to the u2 editor. I will understand if they did it to have diferent textures in each editor for each game, but its just kinda pointless to me otherwise. Do they want it to take a decade?
Or.... did they do it to have each game have its own kind of feeling to it, if thats the case then thats cool, but i just seems like they waisted their time otherwise.
:angst:

No, they have to have a different editor for UT2k3 and U2, because U2 will have all sorts of different actors and such for that game, that will not be ready until after the UT2k3 editor (2.6) is released with that game. It's a necessity.
