As NOS said you'll need the 436 patch because the servers have upgraded and they usually don't accept any version lower than 428 and there isn't a whole lot of those servers. Most of them expect you to be at 436. Don't install any version higher than 436 like 440 or 451 because these are patches for the servers *only* and not for people playing on servers.

Well if you don't want to go to Spamplanet....ummm....I mean Fileplanet then go here it's much much nicer than being Spammed to death waiting in line for 30 minutes for a tiny file and you don't have to wait in line!!!

Edit: Yes you can install the 436 patch without having to install previous versions first. I don't think there are any other patches left on the internet besides 436 for clients anyway. What would be the best thing for you to do would be to install all of the bonus packs first then install the 436 patch so that you will get the newest version of package DE.u which causes a lot of confusion on servers that refuse to connect you because of a version mismatch package DE error. If this happens just go into your system folder and chuck the DE.u package ( you'll have to close the game to do this ) and then let the server give you its (correct) version of the file.

There's another big issue he should be aware of:

Epic pulled off some "funny business" earlier this year and messed around with the settings on the master server browser, presumably in an attempt to try to kill UT by preventing new players from finding servers. So, he might not see any servers listed in the "Find Internet Games" browser. He should seek out and install the "Eavy Server Browser" (yes, Eavy with a V, not "easy") which should solve the problem (along with an installation of v436) If not--come back here and ask for more help.

One other important note. You might come across a UT version 451. If you do, do NOT install it. It could cause lag and might make it hard for you to play on many servers. That particular patch turned out to be a big flop. v436 is all you need and all you want.

Eavy's homepage (http://eavy.beyondunreal.com/)
Eavy has produced numerous Unreal Tournament mutators and mods and is best known for Spawn PRotection and Darkmatch.

It works! this is so much better than playing bots even if i lose sometimes, pity other peoples computers are faster than mine they whizz past sometimes.
If anyone wants to play me i'll be using my regular name but i dont usually make my own matches.

Oh you mean about going in to Unrealtourmament.ini
Find bHidden=True and bFallbackFactories=True
Replace those with bHidden=False and bFallbackFactories=False? This will get the server list going again if the Eavy Serverbrowser doesn't.

Your best bet is to just install the Eavy Server Browser--it's superior to the one that comes with UT, anyway. (When I first started playing, I was fortunate to stumble upon a UT FAQ put out by the AGUT clan, and they recommended getting the Eavy browser, so I've always had it installed, basically.)

As far as the .ini files you, you can find them in the Unreal Tournament System folder. You'll find the files user.ini and unrealtournament.ini -- they save all of your settings (controls setup, player skin, sound volume, favorite servers list, etc). It's a good idea to back those two files up every month since UT can be a buggy program. Often when I have a problem, I just replace those two .ini files with backups and the problem's solved.

I'm {AGUT}JHall. :) AGUT means Alt.Games.Unreal.Tournament. It's a newsgroup. Also the User.ini file has some pretty important stuff in it so it would be a wise idea to back it up too. It has stuff like your name, what skin you're using, and your keybinds in it too. Actually I recommend backing up all of the .ini files except the Manifest.ini. Just take my word for it and don't bother with Manifest.ini ever backing it up or replacing it for any reason. All it has is a listing of all of the stuff you've installed with UT and if your installation gets wiped out you'll have to reinstall anyway and you'll get a new Manifest.ini file. In other words you could possibly make the game think that there are files installed that are not by using an old *backed up* Manifest.ini file on a brand new install of UT.

56k dialup eh? That's what I got and I get lag too but the worst is PACKET LOSS!!! What happens when you get packet loss is you'll have someone shooting you at point blank range and you won't see them at all for a few seconds then they just appear out of nowhere!. Or you'll be running around a corner and halfway down the next straight hallway and presto you're all of the sudden reset back to where you were rounding the corner at to do it all over again. Also the whole time you thought you were running down that hallway you were really just standing still where you went around the corner according to the server. This makes you a complete sitting duck for someone that isn't getting packet loss!!!

What Operating System do you use? Win98, WinME, WinXP, Liniux, etc?
What vid card do you have?
Get a program called Cache Cleaner 3 to clean your Cache folder out.
Make sure you exit _all_ unneeded background programs.
Download AdAware and run & upgrade it regularly.
Do you use or have tried switching to OpenGL?
Defragment your harddisk every week.
Are all of your drivers updated to the latest version? I'm not a big fan of using the latest version of drivers as they can cause more problems than the old ones but they are always worth a try. Sometimes (in very rare cases) even older drivers are the answer.

I have a win98 although it got upgraded, i think i use openGl,but i have solved the problem by simply reinstalling it. And i dont defragment my harddisk that often as it takes about 6 hours and i really cant be bothered. But i have noticed alot of new cahce thingys that come every time i play on the internet but dont know what to do with them, but if the cache cleaner 3 works then i would like to know where to find it.

AAAAAAAAAAA! You lucky Skaarjcrusha you! :) I'm jealous! I probably won't be able to get any kind of broadband where I live for about another 240 billion years or so. They tell me that I'm very lucky to have 56gay dialup that's limited to 26.4gay!. :( What's a broadband anyway? Is that an all girl rock n roll band? or something that goes over a girls shoulders to hold her bazooka's up? Hehee! Yeah I know....my jokes suc!

Well I live miles from nowhere in the backwoods of Tennessee in the USA and they say you have to be within a certain distance of your telphone company to be able to get things like DSL. I live 18 miles from mine and I think you have to be within like 1100 meters or something. There is also no cable TV here as it's too far from town and there isn't enough customers along the way to pay for running the cable down to where I live. I've also considered Satellite but I've heard that it's not that good either. I've been told by some people to just stick to my dial up at 56k. :(
