There have been some intense games here on the playground, but I doubt they've ever been as involved as this

http://www4.ut.ngworldstats.com/games/ctf/65/113/115/146/7777/1020136887843/index.html

This game lasted over 2 hours and produced a 208 mb demo. It was broadcaast on Utv. Ouch

Considering the !N! clan had 2 more players...

Gotta give those [Z] boys some credit!!

LOL. a 2 hour game on November yields 1 flag capture. It's about par for the course... so hard to cap on that map.

That's nuts.

Oh, I've got a story!

My clan was down 1-7 on Glacier and then scored 5 flags in the last 6 minutes and lost by one. Kinda suxx0rd but my point it that everyonce in awhile clanning is worth it.

Those teams were even btw, Z wasn't out numbered.

The worst part is it was probably a horrible cap too, happens all the time. Also i think they subbed out a few players, thats why more people showed on the !N! team than the [Z] team.

Longest game I ever played was November on Cain's Lair. 12 players per side, 2 hours, end score was 1 - 0. Regardless if it were a horrible cap or not, I'm just glad my team scored it. If you have 2 balanced teams on that map it gets brutal. Had to take a serious break after that one.

Do you think that you'd pay to see a UT match on TV (basically pay-per-view)? Assuming it had perfect graphics and good comentary. Think "Battle Bots" on Comedy Central. That started as a pay-per-view event and went on to be the top rated show on Comedy Central.

I've read that Epic's put in some broadcast-friendly tools into UT2003.

Welllll... not until I get an HDTV (which won't be for a long time) .. I couldn't possibly have even decent graphics on my tv, since startd tv res. is like some funky 600*400 or so. Besides, you could always d/l the demo, and watch it that way. I do like the idea of televised matches, and I would probably even watch them.. just not pay to watch them.

Errrrr I think no being that playing cpu games is a hands on event and as GREAT as the action looking in some of those vids people make it's only a few min of the best action.. Ya really want to watch some one just run round not doing much for 20min?

I can see maybe a format where everyone is recording a demo and all of that get made into a highlight reel for a clip with in a cpu short of show but that about it..

Of course I also thought Titanic was going to be the biggest flop of all time :)

Thinking of battle bots, my friends brother is on the C2 robot team what made the Minion.. Got to hang out at the bot lab in la.. really just a garage but still sort of cool to see the bots all torn apart..

Ideally hockey is an interactive sport but people enjoy watching it (visually it's a nightmare: big empty ice and a tiny puck that wants to disapear under digital compression).

The company I'm with is offering NASCAR season tickets where you get seven channels through your cable service (one overview and six in-car cameras. You switch from the seven channels/views to correspond to your own interests).

We also initiated BattleBots (on Pay-Per-View), we spent a ton of money for a Superbowl Weekend launch with features on Jay Leno and other shows. Those in-the-know said that it was a nerd's-only sport, yet it's now one of the most popular shows on Comedy Central.

Anyone see 'G4' yet? It's a recently-launched 24/7 video game channel.

You'd probably need special maps and maybe some special rules to make a interesting viewable event. If it were just a twitch-fest or you couldn't constantly pick up decent action it would be a snore. Would the UT engine be the best platform, or do the serious cybersport leagues use the Quake engine?

Battlebots are fun stuff, DL. I'm working on research in robotics, but it's mostly machine vision stuff, no fighting. Maybe, I'll build a battlebot some day. That's a great show.

I did A.I. grad work on heuristic search (least cost routing, search abstraction, etc.) That's why when the "Battle Bots" idea came up several years ago I was pushing it. I'm a UT freak now, so I'm trying to see about getting something similar going with UT.

Never did anything professionally with the A.I., so good luck on finding a related job after graduation!

P.S. -- If you like BattleBots, check out "Robotica", it has more structured challenges, not JUST two bots flailing about at each other.

LOL when I started playing UT again later on last year I was using a voodoo3000 and my 27inch tv with s-video, choppy, but can anyone say "headshot"?

Well they are planning on bringing UT to the realm of TV maybe and advertising and cash prizes if everything goes as planned:

I've got a lunch set with Mark Rein at E3 to discuss that very thing. He's very up on it.

Interesting Link (http://www.worldcybergames.com/)

The BattleBots fans were very supportive, bought the pay-per-view, watched the Comedy Central shows. In return their sport grew enormously.

I trust UT fans will be JUST as supportive

...or my child will starve :(

Cool stuff, LoPing. I don't know if there is a lot of work out there in A.I., but it's too much fun to ignore. Just did a paper on Co-evolutionary algorithms. Almost went off about UT, however I don't think the Professor could relate. Bots, agents, robots, fun stuff.

http://robotcafe.com/

Here's a goofy search engine. Lot's of instructions for the robot thing. Amateur stuff, but cool.

Freakish: I do pay-per-view. Movies, NBA, NHL, MLB, NASCAR. If you have a cable system and you buy a movie, fight or a "league pass" you're helping keep my kid in sneakers and sprite.

Hopefully we can do something with some cyber sports. Doing my homework I see that there are two cyber leagues out there (one dealing mostly with Counterstrike and one that Epic has sold UT on). I'll certainly post here when I hear about the matches starting up for the UT one so you stronger players in clans can enter. This stuff is ALREADY big time in Korea and other places, I'm just trying to give it a chance here. I can get a league exposure, how well it does is up to the league and the fans' support.

I was trying to see if KG's sister might be interested in having a hostlike role (I sent her an E-mail through her grown-up name), but if not my company'll work with a league to see how best to package a cyber competition (interviews with teams, cheesy commentators, the usual)

Any ideas may end up being used! So post 'em!

LoPing, have you seen any robo-soccer.

LoPing

Just a few film clips. Now those are REAL robots, not just radio controlled mechs.

Who's that inventor that did 'Ginger' (the two wheeled gyro-scooter thing-a-ma-bob)? He does a bot building competition for school kids. We've talked about airing the finals for him as a public service.

ShirleyFT

LoPing, that's a great idea. What might start as a public service might capture the imagination of the pop.
