View Full Version : Video Crashes??

Well, I continue to crash my game, resulting in reboots about 1/2 the time to "fix" the corrupted sounds, (weapons shooting, other sounds are ok, walking/running...).

Anyhow, I've been taking a closer look at my unrealtournament.log file...I am attaching 2 of the most recent crashes here. Could someone take a look...they are both pointing to video issues, (towards the end of the file when the game starts going south).

I've got an NVidia GEForce2 w/64mb DDR

Perhaps its time for an upgrade???

I've never had problems till getting back into UT lately.

Thanks
Radtech

Found someone with a similar issue here:

http://www.unrealized.com/community/messages/4672.html

Both of you have the same "failed vertex buffer lock+flush" message at the beginning of the problem. It looks to be Direct3D related, since he didn't have the problem in OpenGL.

I would suggest making sure you're running the latest DirectX (8.1, I think). And have the latest video drivers. If it's a geForce card, get the latest detonator drivers form nVidia, don't use drivers from the cards manufacutrer. They're not always current.

I have had similar problems. Where Exactly did you find the info log you posted. I would like to compare mine.

Yesterday UT crashed on me 3 times, Once it was a Huge Critical Error that took up 80% of the screen, usually it is only 10 or 12 lines, say 10%. this last time was like 60 or 70 lines. :confused:

Although every 5 min was really bad. now only 3 times in 4 hours, goal is Never. :D

Never Mind I found it, I will look at a couple of other things as well on my other 2 systems, I am missing the Dominator 2 Package as well when loading Sheild Belt. Instead it loads a different skin, I noticed people with the sheild belt dont glow they look like colored mirror of an invisibility if that makes sense. I will post up later.

I have the same issue, (in addition to the video issue in the log file), of not loading the Dominator stuff...

I had a message in a previous Thread someplace from Freakish which mentioned that he didn't show that package anywhere on his system, but that he wasn't getting those errors.

I've reloaded UT from scratch with all associated patches, and all the required related stuff, also, this week, I downloaded/installed the latest XP/Detonator video drivers, but crashed again yesterday and upon looking through the log file, saw the same errors, PLUS the Dominator stuff...

If you figure out what that actually is, or where to get it, let me know, thanks!

Radtech,

I am assuming you are on cable/dsl, and you have a Linksys gateway/router? home network?

1st I would try and bypass the linksys and go straight through to the modem, just as a test.

Let me know how this works for you. And,

2nd if this does work, What kind of Modem are you using?

Thanks, Mofoco

I've got an Alcatel DSL modem. Hooked up to that is an XRouter Pro, (Hardware firewall) router.

In addition, I've got a 100MB hub also. My system is hooked directly to one of the four ports on the XRouter Pro, (instead of the hub). My other servers, (Web and File) are plugged into the hub.

I guess, at some point, I could hook the DSL directly to my system exclusively, but not sure what that may accomplish as my crashes and the log files seem to point towards video...although, I can't pinpoint the actual cause.

OK, I was thinking the same as you are about Video Errors. I have done complete reloads, and latest drivers, still same Prob.

I found that if I bypass the 4 port gateway router, go straight to the modem on any 1 of my 3 P/C's I might crash 2 times in 4 hours. Othewise it will crash every 5 to 15 min on any of them going through the 4 port unit, and sometime more often.

Here is the shortened version of 2 logs in one doc. The Dominator 2 package I think refers to the Skarj skin package, why it gets confused I do not know. As far as the NULL I have not found it in the UT Sytem files, Yet still looking for what it means.

I usually get a critical error and have a collection of them as well but for some reason I cannot get them into a format I can post.

Just the fact that we might have similar problems gives me hope that there is a fix out there, I have been looking for a couple of months now. :confused: :eek:

I think it is a " Raw Packet Received " Issue. I was looking into your log again and saw a similarity. Do you get the critical error pic like this one I am trying to attach?

Also I am thinking it is a possible hardware firewall issue, not sure.

Here is part of your log about 3/4 of the way down....

Log: D3D Driver: warning - failed vertex buffer lock+flush.
Critical: MakeNew
Critical: UD3DRenderDevice::SetTexture
Critical: UD3DRenderDevice::DrawGouraudPolygon
Critical: RenderSubsurface
Critical: URender::DrawLodMesh
Critical: (LodMesh Botpack.MiniAmmom)
Critical: DrawMesh
Critical: URender::DrawActorSprite
Critical: URender::DrawFrame
Critical: URender::DrawFrame
Log: URender::DrawWorld anomaly
Critical: UObject::StaticFindObject
Critical: UObject::StaticAllocateObject
Critical: (ActorChannel ActorChannel7639)
Critical: UObject::StaticConstructObject
Critical: UNetConnection::CreateChannel
Critical: CreateNewChannel
Critical: BunchData
Critical: UNetConnection::ReceivedPacket
Critical: UNetConnection::ReceivedRawPacket
Critical: UTcpNetDriver::TickDispatch
Critical: UpdatePreNet
Critical: ULevel::Tick
Critical: (NetMode=3)
Critical: TickLevel
Critical: UGameEngine::Tick
Critical: UpdateWorld
Critical: MainLoop
Exit: Executing UObject::StaticShutdownAfterError
Exit: Executing UWindowsClient::ShutdownAfterError

See the problem may be the raw packet caused the video failure, not the video itself. About 10 lines up, I know before that it has d3d render issues and well I am grasping here.

Thanks, and try the bypass just for grins.

Here is another Error. I have posted these in the past looking for answers.

I know I am an ID 10 T but I keep trying. LOL

Hey Mofoco

I sent off an Email the other day to NVidia...I had come across a white paper that someone from NVidia had authored regarding Vertex Buffers, etc...(like I know what those are!!!!).

Anyhow...I quickly outlined my issue, (quoting from our log files), and got this in reply from him.

It sounds to me like the application is ignoring some of the return values handed back by the driver and gradually getting into a situation where it just can't cope.

But please remember that this is only a guess - I'm not in a position to make a definitive diagnosis.

I suggest that you try changing the resolution at which you run the game. Try a lower resolution (or lower colour depth) first and see if that makes it any more stable. If that doesn't help (and I think it's the most likely to help) then try a higher resolution. The plan here is to change the load balance (between CPU and graphics card) to see if moving the load around makes a difference.

Apart from that I think you're likely to be stuck with contacting Epic.

Sorry I can't help more,

Might be the next thing to try.
I DO seem to be crashing MUCH less, maybe once a day since I've downloaded and installed the latest Detonator drivers from the NVidia site, (the ones for Windows XP).

Well, continuing on in my (seemingly) never ending search for a non-crash week, (yeah, I'll settle for THAT at this point)!!!

I still can't find anyone that can answer the question about the "missing" Dominator package stuff...

Any luck with that part?

Radtech,
You still have not tried the bypass I assume.

Well the main reason I do not think it is the nvidia or GeForce is because I have the same problem using different equipment.

P/C #1 oldest POS is a P3 450 slot 1 in a Tekran Mobo, 384mb mem, ATI Rage128 16mb vc, Intel NIC, Win 98 SE.

P/C #2 couple years old, Brand new fresh Load of everything on a 20Gb Hd with like 17Gb Free. Asus A7V AMD Tbrd 900 @1Ghz, 512mb mem, GeForce 2 Pro 32Mb, Intel NIC, SB Live X-Gamer 5.1, Win 98 SE.

P/C #3 Still workin the bugs out of XP.
MSI K7T266 Pro, AMD XP1800, 512mb 2100 DDR mem, ATI Radeon 7000 32mb vc (budget, waiting on GF4), Intel NIC 2 20Gb Hdd( using only 1 now), WinXP, like 18 Gb Free.

P/C #4 IBM 233mhz Think Pad, no UT.

P/C #5 is now a ship anchor and does not count, LOL :hammer: oh off the subject it was a 386SX 16 with a Mathco Boost to 387 Wooo Hooo!!!! :blah:

Any way, as long as any one of the top 3 are connected through the Gateway/Router they crash all with the same or simillar errors, I rarely see the exact same Critical Error since there are variables like Maps, and Servers, and Skins ( all reg skins).

When I bypass and go straight to the modem I crash rarely and usually not my fault.

Dominator is the Name of a Skarj Hybrid Skin, I do not know what the 2 is. NULL I have not found yet, I am looking in all of the U and INT files for descriptions. I am going to look into the Mod and Pure pakages next it may be in there, When I figure this out I will let the UT world know.

I have even deleted some of the pakages as to see if they will make it crash or not even run, so far it has always run, still no help in the crash.

You all may say I am crazy for deleting stuff, but I can always reload, as it is only a game P/C. Besides I might get Lucky!!! Yeah Right. LOL:evil:

Next I guess we can boggle the guys at EPIC, won't they like us, Ha ha !!!!
