I have such choppy performance when I play online, more so than a practice match, I have a slow box at 500 mhz so I am sure that is part of it, but I have a cable connection, and I ping at <120 so is there a way to fiddle with these settings, and if so, what do you guys/gals use?

Mango there is a sticky in the UT general discussion forum :)
I cant remember what I used to have mine on, its been so long since I played online.
But I'm getting a cable connection at home the end of the month (Woohoo!) So I can be cannon fodder on the server soon :)

Yeah that's the page I was looking for. I remeber it from when I started UT'ing, just last year, but it was way over my head then. Hopefully I got enough savvy now to suss it. Thanks bro.:D
Looking forward to seeing you on the server Tike. We'll load up 36th and run around. Is there a Damage Amp in that map? I'll have to pull it apart in the ed hehe. I can hi-jack my own thread right?

There's not much to fiddle with, really, you just set the netspeed to whatever your connection can handle (you have no control over the server's tickrate, obviously). My netspeed is set to 8000.

ConfiguredInternetSpeed=10000
ConfiguredLanSpeed=20000
That's what it was, if I am choppy, would it be better to lower it or raise it.. I still don't get that page of TNSe's. I have zero computer knowledge.
[IpDrv.TcpNetDriver]
AllowDownloads=True
ConnectionTimeout=15.0
InitialConnectTimeout=150.0
AckTimeout=1.0
KeepAliveTime=0.2
MaxClientRate=20000

SpawnPrioritySeconds=1.0
ServerTravelPause=4.0
NetServerMaxTickRate=20
LanServerMaxTickRate=35

So is tickrate something controlled only by UP when I am connected? If not, is this the line I adjust? OK it's four in the morn, I got a ton o questions, but I am wiped out. See you guys later.

Yeah, its on the middle route through the central area, above the hole in the round walklway. You need boots or a hammer jump to get it unless you r 1337 then you can dodge of the lill ramps to pick it up.
The worse your connection is the lower your NetSpeed should be set to.
Thats why there is a setting for your connection, it sets it for you, if yo put it on 56k its set to 2500(ouch!)
I think Scourgem has it there with 8000, try that! :)

So is tickrate something controlled only by UP when I am connected? If not, is this the line I adjust?Yeah, tickrate is a setting on the server - it's basically the FPS the server runs at, 20 would mean it 'updates' the world 20 times per second. (20 is a fairly standard tickrate, that's what S1 and S4 are set to afaik)

ConfiguredInternetSpeed=10000try changing this to 8000?
ConfiguredLanSpeed=20000
and should I set my min desired framerate to 20?

Is that in your .ini file?
Its probably the same, I know that if you connect to a server, bring up the console and type "Netspeed 8000" it will change it.
Not too sure abuot your min FPS. Do you have problems with performance when your off line?
GEt on a server and try a few different Netspeeds and FPSs is gonna be your best bet.
Good luck :type:

Yeah, I get really choppy performance unless it's a really small simple map... Like two big boxes filled with lava runs fine. :D I just gotta tighten the belt and upgrade my dinosaur beige rectangular box... Thanks for the tip on the command line, I will bind a bunch of different speeds and see what happens.

10.000 should be fine too, really. As for the framerates, UT can be tweaked quite a bit - try this (http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/ut/index.shtml), for instance, if you haven't already. (I can definitely recommend using an OpenGL renderer, btw)

OpenGL? What GFX Card do you have?
I'm running D3d on a GForce 4200 Ti 64Mb, its pretty sweet. Would be better running in OpenGL?

Truthfully Mango, a 500Mhz processor is going to limit you, no matter what settings, no matter what video card. Even with my previous 1Ghz processor, some maps were still so choppy as to be unplayable (i.e. Baked). I'm now running about 2.2 Ghz, and I can still tell when such maps come up, though now the bottleneck is more on the UP server side, which just can't handle a 20 player spammy load very well.

unless your name is [BFG]DarkStar, /me thinks he's playin' in the shadow of the box itself. :D
I'm experiencing what seem like similar probs with my 1.7 ghz, although my only option is onboard video (no card).
I was doing fine up until a couple months ago. Nothing changed on my end that I know of, except I've noticed this funky stuff: I ping 90-110 in game but when I look at F1 after dying _every_ time it shows _much_ higher numbers like 176 or 224 for a second or less, then instantaneusly goes back to 90-100. :moreconf:

That's a cool link Scourgem. thanks- I have experienced some improvements from following the recomendations there, but I guess I will have to settle for running away when I have the flag and/or stick to efc hunting/defense...:D
Ticalion, I use an ATI Radeon 7000 PCI bus, 64 MB vid card. I have 320 megs SDRAM. P100... I only know that I had two options during tournament install, one was the built in software rendering native to UT, and the other I can't remember, but I think all it said was my VidCard name, not a type of rendering... I know that my card supports open GL, but how could I try that? I am pretty sure UT is in D3D cause that is what the editor shows when I click a title bar.
I guess I will have to upgrade someday Doof....
Precedent, lol at playing in the shadow of the box...
I have different numbers come up too. If I use the favorites pane to choose a server, my pings are all listed from the upper 700's clear to 9999... then when I connect to server, my ping is usually <120. In fact I don't think I've ever seen it higher than that.

Doofus where ya been?
Hey Prec, was outta town for a week, then haven't been playing much since my return, trying to get other things done. When I do play, it's more often on UP4, or any server I can find that has decent performance. And you know I generally play as Jogo_Bonito, right?
If you are interested in a great GeForce 3 card (Gainward Golden Sample), I have a practically new one in the box. I bought it for UT2k3, but since I don't play it, I went back to my VooDoo5 which has better performance with old UT. Better I sell it to someone who can use it before it becomes totally obsolete.

Glad to see you back in action Doofus, I do seem to recall my summertime alter ego Reek getting thumped by Jogo here and there along the way - enough that I tried to look it up but my portugese ain't all that :D
I'll PM you about the card, my dell is a fairly small form factor with only 1 empty PCI slot...so hopefully it'll work! Thing is I'm on the hop trying to get in to my new apt. so no connection == no fragging atm. :angst:
Oh, I just read Hoggy's thread about the new box @ BFG for S1, so there is hope :)
