Well first off i want to apologize for not being on to get fragged as of late.... for some reason .. i have yet to figure out, my comp likes to shutdown on me...... anyway it started while playin UT but now it seems like it is doing it whenever not just when i am playin ut.... plus for some reason my comp won't do an automatic shutdown for me.... meaning when i shutdown windows i actually have to shut off the comp physically. So if anyone wants to give this one a whirl and come up with suggestions let me know... you can send me an e-mail if you wish or just post here.
Thanks

well .... all good things aren't always good. i found out what my problem with what my comp is are you ready for this? it was my video card that bomb gave me :( . i put my old card back in, and everything works again :( this is very frustrating but i guess i will be running UT on an ATI Rage IIC again. ::sighs:: It's better than nothing. see ya on the battlefield.

this may sound stupid, but did you have the latest drivers for it? Or maybe there was a weird IRQ conflict? Have you tried different BIOS settings?
p.s. been watching you play.. you are getting good.

yes i double checked all my bios settings and yes i even reloaded the current drivers and i swear i heard my machine scream before it died after all that. so i thought about it and the only change i had made was the video card so i put my old card back in.. and the damn thing came back to life.... ::sighs again:: i really am beginning to get annoyed with comps.. i have had to resusitate my wife's comp at least twice this past week ... i hope my plans go through to get her a new one for her b-day cause hers in my opinion is now a certifiable oversized paperweight.

how about a PS2 for her instead if you don't like PCs?

do you have another computer that will take that video card? If it causes the same problems on that one, then you know it's the card.
sounds like youre already convinced that it's your new video card though.

unfortunately i don't have another comp to test the card in. what i am thinking about it, is possible compatibility issues with my MB my MB may just be to old for that card. i don't think the card is bad at all. it's just now that i put my old card back in it is now working right. go figure.

I kinda had the same problem. I found that it was my Power Supply. Maybe that's your problem.

Well we will see. I am gonna run my comp with my old card for a week or so and see if the problem develops again. If it does then i will try something else like using a shotgun on it lol
i hate doing tests like this... it's a pain in the a$$ so now i am doin nothing. if it doesn't happen with this card i will see if i can do a specs check on my MB and see if there are any known conflict issues with it and the Geforce 2 video card.

What brand and model was the new card?
Did you remove the old software first? You should remove the old software, install a standard VGA driver, reboot, then install the drivers & software from the new card.

I remember telling you I thought some older motherboards had voltage issues with the Geforce 2 cards. Anyway send me the card back if you can't get it to work properly and I will swap it out with another computer I have (Voodoo 3). Here is my email incase you don't have it anymore. ride@socal.rr.com

I have a motherboard/cpu/hsf that is sitting in my office if you want to test it out (long term)? The only problem may be you having low speed ram. That 64 mb I sent you is PC100, but I imagine the other 64 you have is 66? The board will do 100/133.

concerning the voltage issue, this may be of importance.
AGP 2.0 and AGP 1.0 uses 3.3V. However, AGP 4.0 uses 1.5V. Therefore plugging in a AGP 4.0 card on a AGP 2.0 port will fry the card, unless you have reset it on some motherboards.

ok i'm not completely literate on computer part terminology... what is hsf? You have peaked my interest bomb what's the cpu speed? as you know i am running a 400MHz celeron.

800mhz Tbird (AMD) MSI KT7 Pro 2 Vantec HSF (Heatsink Fan). Have you ever put together a computer?

not really, however my neighbor has and he is helping me with my wifes comp. so i'm sure he wouldn't have a prob with helping me with mine.
:)
i should ask you this what kind of payment are you looking for? i live on a really freaking tight budget.

Why don't you try it first and make sure you can get everything working properly (I used that card on the same motherboard as this one). I won't hold you to any certain dollar figure. The only problem is that you can't just slap this all together with some 200watt powersupply and expect it to work corretly.

what type of power supply does it require. let me know please i may have one.

What are you getting her? You have an old dead K6 machine? I recommend a good 3oo watt PS.
Arcarius

she is getting a 1.0 GHz machine. :) I'll check the power supply in my k6/2 machine and see if it's a 300w. thanks
Get at least a 350W power supply for a 1+ Ghz machine.

thanks F7 we are getting a build it yourself kit for her machine so it should have a 350w ps in it already but i will double check.
Arcarius

well after checking the amd machine and my machine i find that i have 2 250w power supplies :(
which mean i probably need to get a new ps for that board a tower. Any suggestions?? it would be easier if i could just use an existing ps.

ok dude, it's your Power Supply
and I see you have two power supply
use the one with the higher rating on the 3.3v rail
or just use the heaviest power supply
re-install your os if you really want to start clean and have nothing imortant in your computer
try to set your bus speed to like 75mhz
major speed improvement
