When you bought the new pc.. are you sure NOTHING from the old PC was put into the new pic? Sound card? Video card?

You need to give more details about whats in the new PC. A far fetched answer to your problem is maybe you have some sort of power surge issue with the plug outlet you are plugging your computer into.

What sorts of programs are you running in the background while playing UT?

How often does it happen? Sometimes UT just will crap out for no reason. Happens to me from time to time.

Are there any other problems with other applications locking up on you?

Try making sure you have very little running in the background as possible while running UT. I never have ICQ open during UT.

I hear F7's footsteps.. he'll be able to give you 200 things you can do to optimize your computer :D

thx for the tip phan.... however, i'd tried to quit everything before i start UT, and same thing happened:(

Mobo drivers. Update them :) Flash your BIOS to the current version. Especially since you're using WinXP. Chances are there are at least 2 new BIOS's that have been released by Asus since you got your PC. Figure out which motherboard you have and let me know. I'll let you know how to flash your BIOS if you're not comfortable with it.

Also like Phan said, close out EVERYTHING when playing UT. Shut down ICQ and IE.

I recall seeing somewhere a tweak with the MX version of GeForce2. Let me see what I can dig up.

This problem actually happens to me as well sometimes. It's not a common occurence, more of a random happenstance. There's nothing to do but reboot.

I have noticed however that since updating my BIOS to the latest release, I haven't had this problem in quite a while.

Go to www.voodoofiles.com and download the most recent GTU program. That is a GeForce Tweak Utility program that helps the stability and is customizable.
Look under NVidia Card Tools, the Beta version is what I use and it works fine.

Also I have the best luck with 22.80 drivers for the( 3 )GeForce cards I'm running.

Are what some of you are saying is that you've been able to stop UT from crashing? If so, that is an amazing accomplishment.

I always figured that UT was just an unstable game. I've had the above mentioned freezes (where the game works, but all input stops), crashes that don't seem to affect the OS (but leave an error message box, which is usually never the same), and all manner of weirdness. Since this has happened on 2 seperate computers, neither of which shared any of the same hardware, and using Win 98, 2000, and XP, I had to assume the problem was game related. I've updated drivers, flashed the BIOS, increased cooling, downloaded registy fixes, and swapped vid cards, and have never had UT be all that stable. I assume I'm not the only one to have problems, judging by how many people seem to be doing well, only to leave the game and then log back in right away.

The only thing that has given me any relief was to start taking screenshots of the error messages. Me and Britney were collecting them so that we could send 100 or so to Epic and ask them so have them analized(sic?).:)

I don't know what the hell I have done... But I don't have problems like you folks at all.

Even on my old PC, it works like a champ. So I have two boxes up and running stable...

OLD -
Gateway P3-450 (Tabor mobo if anyone cares - it's Gateway)
384MB RAM
3dfx Voodoo 3 3K
SB Live Value
WinXP (Win2000 previously - no issues other than sound probs while waiting for Win2K drivers)

NEW -
ASUS mobo - A7V266-E/AA
AMD XP1900+
512MB RAM
ATI Radeon 8500
Audigy Platinum

Sure... I get the occasional error (maybe 1 out of every 300 maps), but those are pretty common in the UT world. I restart the game (not the box) and it runs just fine (provided I can get back into the Playground... :) ). None of the crap that you guys get.

Maybe I'm lucky?

You know, I had those same problems with my old box PIII600, Rage Pro vid. I couldn't play two games in a row online or off without crashing. I switched over to a AMD 1.13 w/Voodoo 5 and it only crashes about once every 40 or so games. I attribute the new stability to the AMD (course the voodoo doesn't hurt). Does anyone think this makes a difference, the AMD vs. Pentium? Just curious.

For the mobo drivers, do you know if there is an official Winsonic mobo drivers site? I can't find their drivers for some reason. I want to upgrade to AthlonXP without buying a new mobos cuz my current mobos was during the Thunderbird core time.

when you mean crash, do you mean that your mouse and keyboard froze while the gameplay is still on?

Try playing without sound and see if its more stable. I dont think turning your sound volume all the way down in UT will do it. I think you have to go pull down your console (~ key) and type in preferences, and i think it's under Game Engine Settings or something like that. Also, turn of digital music too.

Try to take a printscreen when the error comes up.

thanks phan, i'll try to turn the sound off. Do you want me to take the screenshot WHEN the problem happens or the error msg?

Haven't tried to play in 'safe mode' though...

flashing my bios is dangerous....is it?

Phanataz
02-22-2002, 01:05 AM
well you just have to know what you are doing. I've actually ruined a motherboard, because I used the wrong bios. Most newer boards have a fail safe, so that if you screw up flashing the bios, you can recover the motherboard from it.

Hey, I feel your pain. If you read my post above, these error messages are never the same. I'v e had ones that are just as big (and confusing). For God's sake, if you figure out the cause, let me know. Me and Britney still feel the only way to respond is if enough people send them into Epic, and then maybe, maybe, will something be done about it
