Bad news for everyone who has heard the stories about UT2 being playable on older hardware. AnandTech has an article about performance testing a benchmark suite based on the latest build of the Unreal engine. Read about it here:

Ouch. Guess it's time to trade in that Voodoo3.
You're right, time to get the old check book out.
Where does the Voodo5 5500 fit in, meaning to which card is it comparable to - GeForce 2 Ti 200, Ultra, Mx, or GeForce 3 dare I say?
Also, has anyone been able to OC their V5 5500 higher than 175 mhz? If yes, please instruct how you were able to accomplish it? If I push mine higher than 175, UT becomes very unstable and the system will hang.

I was hoping it would run on my pentium133 and 4mb ati card :( .
I do not think the build of the Warfare engine they did the stress test on is representative of what unreal2 or unreal tournament2 will be like. That build more than likely has features in it that will not be in either game. I can't remember but I think Legend said that U2 min specs were like a pentium 450 with a first generation geforce card or equivalent T&L card. So I'm betting if you have a 700mhz machine with first generation geforce then you should be able to run in smoothly at 800 x 600. If you have a geforce3 then you should be able to run it smoothly at 1024x768 with most (but not all) details on high. In a game like this the graphics card is everything. I think I heard that UT2 might even optimize their game for lower end cards like voodoo3.....

Woof...
Quote:
"To put things into perspective, the average polygon counts range from 50 - 100 times that of Unreal Tournament. We were also told that texture usage has increased approximately 8 fold as well. Courtesy of DXT texture compression, the overall memory bandwidth usage has only gone up by a quarter of that."
Their conclusion that only the Geforce3 Ti 500 and Radeon 8500 pass the MINIMUM standard of 30fps at 1024x768 is frightening (ruling out ALL 13 other cards with the GE2 being worst...
ATI is out altogether...
Guess I'll save my pennies...

this is just stress test
the guy who's working on Unreal II said his running Unreal II
on Celeron 700 with GeForce1 and he said the frams are OK
not that great but you can play it normally.

Cheaper alternatives now include the Geforce4MX series. They perform a little bit slower than the current GF3s, but they are seriously cheaper than the GF3s. Check them out, it won't cost you too much.

Yeah-- and the "frames are OK comment" means it will SUCK online without alot of horsepower under the hood.
Already with UT we those with the best ping and the right combo of electronica dominate others with slower (though even cable) connections, lesser pings or lesser gear. If you come into UT2 with a Radeon 8500, lots of horsepower and a ping of 50 you'll fast be an "elite" regardless of your actual skill.

welcome the big monster, Nvidia's GF4 Ti4600!!!!!!!
Beats Radeon 8500 by a whole street!!!!
But if you haven't go the cash, you can still get the GF4 Ti4200!!!
Two vertex shaders, high memory clock speeds, 128MB DDRRAM, UT2? No Problem!!!!
