Scourgem's review (http://www.unrealplayground.com/review.php?id=433)
DM-Victoria is a great map; saying that it's worth your bandwidth is an understatement. It is just as good as - and in some ways better than - the retail maps that shipped with the game.
Great work!

I think that it has some great work done in it but I disagree with the high rating. It doesn't flow well enough to deserve such a rating and is way to dark in many areas. Meshes are great but not when you're constantly tripping over objects in battle. The map does indeed show greatness of skill, but ultimately what makes a map is playability and re-playability. $0.03

Hmmmm.... compared to most of Epic's maps this one has intuitive flow and has little to trip over like those maps...
Too dark? I play at my default settings and didn't notice any areas that seemed remotely too dark...
IMO

thought it was more fun to play than most if not all of epics maps

You must be kidding. I had to bump up my brightness to 9 and my gamma to 1.2
On my already bumped up settings I run 1 / 0.7 / 0.7
On those settings I could not even see the bots in the darkness in many places.
What are your settings?

It helps if you take off the welder's mask. ;)
Seriously, I have no brightness problems with this level. But then again I look at a perfectly good jpg of mine on other people's monitors and can barely see it on some of them :dunno:

I'm not at home to check but I am 99% certain I am at factory default. Don't know what difference dot pitch might make... mine is .20

Here is a thought. Just something that jumped into my head.
Could this be an OS related issue? Maybe a Video Card issue?
My original settings were 0.8/0.7/0.7 and all of the Epic / DE maps were fine. Not until I got Angels Garden map did I first have to turn the gama up. Then this one.
I wonder about it because I know that unlike any other games UT2K3 makes the gama / brightness / contrast changes in the monitor bios. Could it be related to that purhaps?
Out of interest screen shots of the same area of a map on different machines under different OS might help point us in the right direction.
Here are a couple screens of what I see with out turning the brightness and gama up.

And this one.
Now no offense intended this is a fine map. It is just that some of us are seeing it very dark. I had the same problem with Angels GardenofHeaven map which is what prompted me to bump my settings up the first time.

I'm not surprised to see this actually - the brightness and gamma in my level was severely changed ever since I installed the new patch and ran the DE Bonus Pack - so had to do a bit of fiddling about to get it back to the levels I had originally worked with - Also - are you running in OpenGL?

IMO I thought map was to bright. For me it's as bright as CTF-Face3.

It should be dark, its an abonded power plant.

it certainly would be helpful if we had a brightness standard to map to or something. All the time maps look too dark to me and other people tell me they are too bright, or the other way around.

Well... 2k3 adjusts brightness in the editor but it can't compensate for one's individual settings.
I'm sure it is some combo of hardware and software. Generally, I've had no problems but your mileage may vary.

Actualy UT2K3 changes setting in my monitor bios. Not just a change in the reduring in game but an altering of my monitor bios settings. First game I've noticed doing this. For reference I has Windoes XP Pro. I don't recall it doing this when I was running Win 98. So even if I changed my monitor settings, once into UT2K3 they would be changed to the UT2K3 settings.
I've only had this problem on two maps so far though.

No changes for the monitor bios in Win98SE here. Strangely enough, I'm not having any issues with the darker maps in UT2003 like I did with UT. With UT, I really didn't care for dark maps just as a preference. This map looks great and played well for me; of course, my gamma is turned up a little from the defaults also.

If it was the overall mood and theme that you were trying to create I ment no offence, I think that's type of stuff is a nice way of adding mood in a single player map. But for FFA DM I just don't play them to me FFA DM should be lit up enough that the map does not get in the way of combat. I was not trying to be offensive at all just state my findings.
However I don't think with as many people who have replied with the same findings (dark) that my system is the problem.
If it helps though...
ASUS A7V 133
Duron 800MHz
GeForce 4 Ti 4200 (128MB)
512MB RAM
CTX 17" monitor
Windows XP (DX9)
Desktop 1024X768
in game 800X600
FOV 85 (default)
I do not tweak gamma because it makes graphics look washed out and ashy grey looking. Quite frankly though I don't have to adjust any other games nor UT2003 in any other maps, just a select few that I have downloaded. But there's plenty other maps that don't have this problem, it's just a shame to see such a fine map that I won't want to play.

The screenshots for the review were taken at UT2003s default gamma; I found the map a bit murky, but not so dark that bumping the gamma was necessary (I've always preferred dark over washed out).
It has to do with the screen settings, I guess. :dunno:
